  • Business Environment, Exports, Ownership, and Firm Performance

Simon Commander, Jan Svejnar•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2011

We use two large samples of firms to assess the effects of business environment constraints, competition, export orientation, and ownership on firm performance. We deal with omitted variables, errors in variables, and endogeneity, and find that few business constraints affect performance. Replicating the analysis with Doing Business and Heritage Foundation indicators of the business environment yields similar results. In fact, country fixed effec…

  • ICT and Productivity in Developing Countries

Simon Commander, Rupert Harrison et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2011

This paper uses a unique new data set on manufacturing firms in Brazil and India to estimate production functions, augmented by information and communications technology (ICT). We find a strong positive association between ICT capital and productivity in both countries that is robust to several different specification tests. The paper also breaks new ground when using the Indian data to investigate the effect of the institutional and policy envir…

  • Malthus and the Theory of 'Unequal Powers

    Open Access•Simon Commander•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•1986•Cited by: 5•References: 28

The spectre of a 'Malthusian' catastrophe engulfing the subcontinent commands less attention currently than in relatively recent times. This is largely attributable to the greater sense of confidence in the food-grain supply capacity of Indian agriculture in the wake of the Green Revolution. From the mid-1960s through to 1980, output has maintained a growth rate in excess of 2.5% p.a., with yield increments rather than area increments accounting …

  • The Jajmani System in North India

    Open Access•Simon Commander•ARTICLE•Modern Asian Studies•1983•Cited by: 22•References: 20

As the universality of political economy has receded before the myriad instances of particular economic rationalities, it has become increasingly clear that most non-capitalist structures are organized around a multi-centric set of dynamics. In this regard one would expect to find that the economic as a category possesses less univocal clarity and its precise sense is only vouchsafed through a cognisance of the broader, integrating set of validat…

  • Colonial Rule and Economic Subordination

    Simon Commander•ARTICLE•Études rurales•1983

This paper examines the impact of colonial rule on a region of India that was very partially integrated into external trade markets. In particular, it suggests that while, as in other parts of India, imports of manufactured goods from the metropolitan country undermined local, artisanal and proto-industrial production, in the agricultural sector considerable growth in output occurred. In addition, as a result of state land revenue policy and the …
