  • Defining “Conspiracy Theory” Without Begging the Question

    Open Access•Romy Jaster, Geert Keil•ARTICLE•Erkenntnis•2026

Generalism about conspiracy theories (CTs) is the view that CTs, as a class, are epistemically flawed. Particularists argue that each CT must be judged individually on its evidence. Both sides accuse each other of circular reasoning—of defining the term “CT” in ways that make their conclusions trivially true. This paper proposes a way out of this deadlock. In section (1), we argue that the debate is path-dependent: resolving the impasse requires …

  • Why Frankfurtian all-in can’ts are irrelevant to free will

    Geert Keil•ARTICLE•Inquiry•2023

This paper argues that Frankfurt-style counterexamples do not compromise the agent’s ability to decide otherwise. In his attack on the Principle of Alternative Possibilities, Frankfurt relied on what Austin called the ‘all-in’ sense of ‘can’, and misconstrued the agent’s inability to do otherwise as an all-in can’t. Like the new dispositionalists, I maintain that the agent’s relevant abilities are ‘masked’ rather than lost in Frankfurt cases. The…

  • Aristotle's Anthropology

    Open Access•Geert Keil, Nora Kreft•EDITOR•BOOK•Aristotle's Anthropology•2019

This is the first collection of essays devoted specifically to the nature and significance of Aristotle's anthropological philosophy, covering the full range of his ethical, metaphysical and biological works. The book is organised into four parts, two of which deal with the metaphysics and biology of human nature and two of which discuss the anthropological foundations and implications of Aristotle's ethico-political works. The essay topics range…

  • Vagueness in Psychiatry

Tim Thornton, Geert Keil et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Vagueness in Psychiatry•2017

In psychiatry there is no sharp boundary between the normal and the pathological. Although clear cases abound, it is often indeterminate whether a particular condition does or does not qualify as a mental disorder. For example, definitions of subthreshold disorders and of the prodromal stages of diseases are notoriously contentious. Philosophers and linguists call concepts that lack sharp boundaries, and thus admit of borderline cases, 'vague'. A…
