Dose and Timing of Prenatal Alcohol Exposure and Maternal Nutritional Supplements: Developmental Effects on 6-Month-Old Infants
Chronic radiation exposure in the Rivne‐Polissia region of Ukraine: Implications for birth defects
OBJECTIVES: The health effects of chronic low-dose radiation exposure remains a controversial question. Monitoring after the Chernobyl nuclear accident in Ukraine suggested that chronic low-dose radiation exposure was not linked to cancer mortality among the general population. However, elevated rates of birth defects in contaminated compared to uncontaminated regions suggest that exposure to radiation in utero might impact development and that c…
Acceptance of genetic services: A study of physicians in Colombo, Sri Lanka
A survey of 302 physicians from Colombo, Sri Lanka, reveals a strong overall acceptance of genetic counselling, prenatal diagnosis of genetic disorders and therapeutic abortion. Demographic and experiential factors, especially being older and having children, were associated with acceptance of genetic services. There was little support for prenatal diagnosis in order to satisfy curiosity about the sex of the fetus. The results of this analysis we…
Effects of education, distance and satellite clinics on the growth of genetic services
The effect of educational activities, distance from a genetic centre, and presence of satellite clinics on the growth in genetic services in three regions served (south Alabama, west Florida and southeast Mississippi) was examined. Comparisons of growth trends between the three regions were made in the context of regional differences in clinical and educational variables. Multiple regression analyses of growth in clinical services with these vari…
Maternal sociomedical characteristics and birth weights of firstborns
A method for subclassifying the interdigital patterns: A comparative study of the palmar configurations
A method for subtyping the interdigital patterns is introduced, which is based upon the direction of the main line terminations as well as the presence of accessory triradii. The palmar patterns of several population samples from our files representing the Caucasians, Negroes, Miconesians and New Guinean groups are evaluted in terms of the introduced calssification and the results demonstrate a number of differences between the major racial group…
