Using the socio-ecological model in understanding antimicrobial resistance and antibiotic usage in the lakeshore communities of Calamba and Pila, Laguna, Philippines
Lakes in low- to middle-income countries like the Philippines are increasingly contaminated with antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) determinants, particularly beta-lactam antimicrobials, leading to difficult-to-treat multidrug-resistant infections. Despite growing concerns, few interventions have been thoroughly evaluated to mitigate environmental contamination from hospitals, agriculture, and livestock production. To address this gap, this study empl…
Factors influencing pediatric Covid-19 vaccination uptake
Key factors associated with COVID-19 pediatric vaccination uptake in the Philippines were perceived protection against COVID-19 illness, government mandated regulations and healthcare worker recommendations, while non-vaccination was associated with safety concerns, and children's age and preference to not be vaccinated. Understanding the social and behavioral drivers among caregivers may help policy decision-makers and implementers develop targe…
Critical medical ecology and intersectionality perspectives in schistosomiasis prevention and control in selected communities in Mindanao, the Philippines
Schistosomiasis japonica remains a public health concern in many areas of the Philippines. Periodic Mass Drug Administration (MDA) to at-risk populations is the main strategy for morbidity control of schistosomiasis. Attaining MDA coverage targets is important for the reduction of morbidity and prevention of complications due to the disease, and towards achieving Universal Health Care. The study employed a qualitative case study design. Key infor…

This trend stems from a polarised Western understanding of gender as a binary concept of man-woman. Such an approach also mirrors the dominant framing of disasters and disaster risk reduction (DRR), emphasising Western standards and practices to the detriment of local, non-Western identities and experiences. This paper argue…

Findings Coastal communities encounte…
From Deviant to Bakla , Strong to Stronger
Disaster risk reduction (DRR), and indeed development at large, has traditionally been reluctant to acknowledge and accept the issue of gendered and sexual diversity in its mainstream policy design and practice. Recent forays into mainstreaming gender and sexual minorities into DRR have, however, highlighted the crucial role that these minorities play in bigger development aspirations of participation and empowerment. This debate article explores…
