  • Derrida

    Open Access•Maurizio Ferraris•ARTICLE•Derrida Today•2026

This paper explores Maurizio Ferraris’s philosophical dialogue with Jacques Derrida, tracing the evolution from deconstruction to documentality and the emergence of a realist ontology suited for the digital age. While acknowledging Derrida’s influence, Ferraris distances himself from postmodernism’s obsession with overcoming metaphysics, proposing instead that social reality is grounded not in collective intentionality but in recording, summarize…

  • Webfare

    Open Access•Maurizio Ferraris•BOOK•Webfare•2024

From time immemorial, humans have been making deals, consuming goods, cultivating interests, thereby manifesting specific forms of life. Now, these forms of life solidify automatically by transforming into data. Webfare, a form of digital welfare, seeks to initiate a Copernican revolution that places need instead of merit at the center of society. In 21st-century welfare, consumption and production will be considered as the two faces of the same …

  • Gianteresio Vattimo, 1936–2023

    Open Access•Maurizio Ferraris•ARTICLE•California Italian Studies•2024

Over the course of fifty years, Gianni Vattimo was a friend, teacher, and adversary for me. I must resist the temptation to speak here of my own memories of him in order to provide readers of this brief essay with what I think is destined to endure after Vattimo’s death, the essence of which can be found in the collection of his writings entitled Scritti filosofici e politici (Philosophical and Political Writings)

  • Hysteresis

    Maurizio Ferraris, Sarah De Sanctis•BOOK•Hysteresis•2023

Since the 1780s, Western philosophy has been largely under the spell of Immanuel Kant’s transcendental philosophy. In this book, Maurizio Ferraris offers a number of important criticisms of Kant in a book of two parts, written 21 years apart. The first part of the book, 'Observation', originally published in 2001, lays the foundations of Ferraris' New Realism, foreshadowing the realist turn that has become characteristic of 21st century philosoph…

  • Doc-Humanity

    Maurizio Ferraris, Sarah De Sanctis•BOOK•Doc-Humanity•2022

However you view the present time, it is a new century, a new world, and also a new humanity - in fact, humanity is not something that was ever defined once and for all, but remains an open project. For several decades we have been witnessing a revolution. However, unlike the political and ideological revolutions that took place around the First World War, this is a technological and much more radical one that does not depend on people's beliefs,…

  • Doc-Humanity

    Maurizio Ferraris, Sarah De Sanctis•BOOK•Doc-Humanity•2022

The time has come to stop thinking of the future as a projection of the past. The technological revolution has brought with it a new ecosystem. Understanding the Webs nature is the first step toward understanding this revolution, which generates a new world, a new capital, a new humanity: doc-humanity.

  • Money, Social Ontology and Law

Angela Condello, Maurizio Ferraris et al.•BOOK•Money, Social Ontology and Law•2019

Presenting legal and philosophical essays on money, this book explores the conditions according to which an object like a piece of paper, or an electronic signal, has come to be seen as having a value. Money plays a crucial role in the regulation of social relationships and their normative determination. It is thus integral to the very nature of the "social", and the question of how society is kept together by a network of agreements, conventions…

  • Realism as emergentism

    Maurizio Ferraris•ARTICLE•Journal of Critical Realism•2018

In this paper, I assume that, if knowledge does not refer to something other than itself, the words ‘subject’, ‘object’, ‘epistemology’, ‘ontology’, ‘knowledge’ and ‘reflection’ would be meaningless. I define the transcendental fallacy as involving faith in the existence of a spirit independent from matter, capable of producing representations and things. In terms of matter and memory, the fact that the past is repeated by matter is even more imp…

  • What is Documediality and why Traces, Documents and Archives are Normative

Open Access•Maurizio Ferraris, Valeria Martino et al.•ARTICLE•Law/text/culture•2018

The documedia revolution is a technological, social, and anthropological revolution. It has indeed been possible thanks to the constructive force of documentality in conjunction with the communicative and mobilizing power of the web. It is a connection between documents and media that has involved a very large number of people, in a completely unexpected way. Therefore, it can be defined anthropological because it directly concerns human beings, …

  • Mobilisation totale

    Maurizio Ferraris•BOOK•Mobilisation totale•2016

  • A brief history of new realism

    Open Access•Maurizio Ferraris•ARTICLE•Filozofija i drustvo•2016•References: 3

In this paper I try to sketch a brief history of new realism. Starting from nineteenth century idealism, I then move on to discuss twentieth century postmodernism, which, I argue, is the heir of idealism and the theoretical enemy of new realism. Finally, I offer a reconstruction of how and why contemporary new realism came into being and propose a few remarks on its future perspectives

  • Collective intentionality or documentality

    Open Access•Maurizio Ferraris•ARTICLE•Philosophy & Social Criticism•2015•Cited by: 1

In this article I defend two theses. The first is that the centrality of recording in the social world is manifested through the production of documents, a phenomenon which has been present since the earliest phases of society and which has undergone an exponential growth through the technological developments of the last decades (computers, tablets, smartphones). The second is that the centrality of documents leads to a view of normativity accor…

  • Manifest des neuen Realismus

    Maurizio Ferraris•ARTICLE•Klostermann eBooks•2014

• The Philosopher-Son

    Maurizio Ferraris•ARTICLE•The European Legacy•2007

Many elements of Derrida's “psychoanalytic” philosophy support the view that for most of his career he remained a philosopher-son: the disruptive attitude toward a systematic style, the tendency to exaggerate, the fervor—so like that of Heidegger, Freud, and especially Nietzsche—with which he repeatedly stages confrontations with his father-masters. However, Derrida never claimed, with the postmoderns, that every kind of reality is socially and h…

  • Postmodernism and the Deconstruction of Modernism

Maurizio Ferraris, Anna Taraboletti Segre•ARTICLE•Design Issues•1988

Postmodernism has an ancient history. This fact is not postmodernism's only paradox, although it is the best known and certainly the richest in philosophical consequences. Since JeanFrancois Lyotard's 1979 pamphlet, La Condition Postmoderne, which initiated the philosophical and European debate on postmodernism, philosophical postmodernism has been characterized (at least by its promoters) as the consequence of a dissolution of modernist projects…
