Adornment in the early Mesolithic: Analysis of marine shells from La Baume de Monthiver (Jabron, Var, France)
We analyzed shell beads from a Sauveterrian occupation in South-Eastern France. • The traceological analysis at a macro- and microscopical scales indicated the way it was perforated, worn and the type of thread used. • Despite a shared choice in raw material on a very large scale, some regional dynamics can be outlined. The widespread distribution of the Sauveterrian complex across Europe suggests the presence of networks connecting distant group…
Domestic, artisanal, and ritual activities in a classic Maya city: Functional analysis of flint drills from the Cancuén site (AD 650–800, Guatemala)
Combining experiment and ethnoarchaeology to differentiate the surface conditions of animal hides
There is a wide range of technical processes involved in working animal skins, depending on the environment, the size of the skins and the purpose of the work (clothing, tent covers, etc.). The archaeological tools and their shape, weight, and use-wear are often the only evidence of these technical processes. Their understanding requires an experimental approach combined with ethnoarchaeological data to establish protocols allowing processes comp…
When Che’ (wood) meets tun (stone): Experimental programs and functional analysis of stone tools. The case of the Classic Maya site of Cancuén (Guatemala)
The function of small tools in Europe during the Middle Pleistocene: The case of Marathousa 1 (Megalopolis, Greece)
Small flake industries are a commonly identified component of Lower Paleolithic archaeological assemblages in Eurasia. Utilized as blanks for tools, at many sites, their functions are often poorly understood. Here we present a preliminary traceological analysis of lithics from Marathousa 1 (MAR-1; Megalopolis, Greece). MAR-1 dates to ca. 400-500 ka BP and is one of the oldest open-air sites in South-Eastern Europe. It has yielded a lithic assembl…
Reconstructing Magdalenian hunting equipment through experimentation and functional analysis of backed bladelets
Ethnoarchaeology of Fuel Use in Northern Forests: Towards a Better Characterization of Prehistoric Fire-Related Activities
Prehistoric fuel management and hearth functions are key research issues that have benefitted from the development of experimental and ethnoarchaeogical approaches aimed at providing interpretative models for archaeological fire and fuel studies. In this paper, we present a selection of ethnographic, ethnoarchaeological and ethnohistorical data mostly collected among Evenks and Athabascans of East Siberia and North America. Our aim is to question …
Birch Bark Tar Production: Experimental and Biomolecular Approaches to the Study of a Common and Widely Used Prehistoric Adhesive

Resharpening and recycling: Different conceptions of the Magdalenian tools
First Sculpted Human Face in the Western Mediterranean Early Neolithic
The development of the Neolithic way of life in the western Mediterranean during the sixth millennium cal. BC is the consequence of the spread of populations from the Near East after successive stages of cultural remodelling. Despite the clear contribution of the Near Eastern and Aegean Neolithic to the economic and technical changes that happened to the west, little is known here about their symbolic legacies, because of the scarcity of represen…

Soucy 1 is the first of six Middle Pleistocene sites found in fluvial context on an ancient terrace of the Yonne river at Soucy (North Burgundy), in a stratigraphic sequence cautiously attributed to the Holsteinian interglacial. It was excavated during a salvage operation in 1995 and has yielded more than 2 500 remains (lithic, fauna and pebbles). Spatial analysis reveals areas of flaking activities, concentrations of faunal remains and one conce…
The Near-Eastern Mousterian is characterized by a large development of Levallois debitage industries, mainly focusing on the production of triangular elements (Levallois points, triangular and subtriangular flakes), most often resulting from a convergent unipolar mode of exploitation. Among the tools identified in these industries, the first usewear analyses had emphasised the presence of projectile points. However, recent work leads us to modify…
Are we able to determine the function of the earliest palaeolithic tools?
Microscope examination of neolithic and middle palaeolithic tools shows that the marks on the earlier tools are generally longer and more difficult to interpret. The later tools almost always show more characteristic wear traces. The colder the tool, the more difficult it is to determine the ergonomy. This does not mean that the validity of the results obtained for the earliest tools is in question, but only that the interpretations are more diff…
Unusually well preserved animal bone accumulations, representing the refuse of single butchering episodes, have been found in Neolithic levels (Vth and IVth millennia b.c.) of a cave in Southern France. These bone clusters contain the remains of one or a few individuals, either domestic sheep or wild boars. The integrity of these features has been checked through conjoining of fragments, rearticula- tion of bones and horizontal and vertical plots…
