The Aftermath of Montreal’s Horse-Drawn Carriage Ban: An Ecological Description of Loneliness
Loneliness is gaining attention in anthropology, largely through phenomenological approaches. Based on fieldwork with Montreal’s horse-drawn carriage drivers, and inspired by Whitehead’s ontological principle, I propose to study loneliness using ecological description, a mode of analysis that understands living beings through two kinds of reasons: traceable causes and an organism’s situated orientation. The coming into force of the by-law banning…

The Disappearance of Urban Horses and the Rise of Homelessness and Mental Illness
Homelessness is growing in cities across the Western world, accompanied by high rates of mental health problems. To address this crisis, programs focus on providing affordable housing and mental health services. Yet this effort seems insufficient to stem the tide. Based on long-term ethnographic research with horse-drawn carriage drivers in Montreal, I tell the story of Jerome, who was experiencing homelessness and psychic distress prior to his u…

The meaning and experience of stress among supported employment clients with mental health problems
Many clinicians are concerned that competitive work may cause excessive stress for people with severe mental health problems. Individual Placement and Support (IPS) is acknowledged as the most effective model of supported employment for this population. The manner in which IPS clients define and experience employment-related stress is poorly understood. This qualitative study aims to explore how people with mental health problems receiving IPS se…
A Bayesian Approach to Latent Class Modeling for Estimating the Prevalence of Schizophrenia Using Administrative Databases
Estimating the incidence and the prevalence of psychotic disorders in the province of Quebec has been the object of some interest in recent years as a contribution to the epidemiological study of the causes of psychotic disorders being carried out primarily in UK and Scandinavia. A number of studies have used administrative data from the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ) that includes nearly all Quebec citizens to obtain geographical …
