Promoting Postsecondary Education in Low-Income Youth: The Moderating Role of Socio-Behavioral and Academic Skills in the Context of a Major Educational Reform
Prevention of Criminal Offending: The Intervening and Protective Effects of Education for Aggressive Youth
Children from poor neighbourhoods showing early aggressive behaviour are at risk for criminal offending. The role of education as a mediator, neighbourhood disadvantage and aggression as moderators for criminal offending were examined in a lower-income, community sample (n = 3,521; 48% males), across a 40-year period from childhood to mid-adulthood. Educational attainment accounted for 15–59% of the effect from childhood risk factors. Aggression …
Longitudinal and Concurrent Pathways to Alcoholism: The Importance of Perception of Neighborhood Disorder
Neighborhood‐level and individual‐level variables from childhood and adulthood were examined in relation to alcoholism in adulthood. In 1976–1978, children from working‐class neighborhood schools in Montreal, Canada participated in a study examining the outcomes of childhood behaviors. At this time, peer nominations of childhood aggression were collected. In 1999–2003, these participants were contacted during mid‐adulthood (N = 676) and asked to …
The Intergenerational Continuity of Fathers' Absence in a Socioeconomically Disadvantaged Sample
Fathers' absence is a pattern that shows intergenerational continuity, most notably within disadvantaged populations. The process whereby this pattern is repeated across generations is not well understood. Using data from the Concordia Longitudinal Risk Project, the authors investigated pathways between fathers' absence in 1 generation and the experience of fathers' absence by their children. The current sample included 386 socioeconomically at-r…
Social Problem Solving in High‐risk Mother–Child Dyads: An Intergenerational Study
This study examined the contribution of maternal childhood histories of aggression and social withdrawal to the prediction of mother–child social problem solving in the next generation. Fifty‐seven women (M = 37.32 years), previously rated (on a version of the pupil evaluation inventory) by their peers during childhood on measures of aggression and withdrawal, discussed conflicts with their 9‐ to 13‐year‐old children. Problem‐defining statements,…
Likeability, Aggression, and Social Withdrawal in Childhood, Psychiatric Status in Maturity: A Prospective Study
Likeability was examined as an attribute of aggression and withdrawal and as a separate dimension of children's peer relations to determine its influence on psychiatric status in maturity. The sample consisted of 145 men and 177 women who had been as
Continuity and Pathways from Aggression in Childhood to Family Violence in Adulthood: A 30-year Longitudinal Study
Maternal and child health problems: The inter-generational consequences of early maternal aggression and withdrawal
Age-related differences in children's perceptions of social deviance: Changes in behavior or in perspective
Friendship in Normal and Socially Deviant Children
The present study assessed whether groups of normal and socially deviant children differed in numbers of friends and popularity. Subjects were 844 children in grades 4 through 7. They were classified as aggressive, withdrawn, aggressive-withdrawn or nondeviant on the basis of a peer nomination sociometric, the Pupil Evaluation Inventory (PEI). Friendship was defined as a reciprocated friendship nomination between two children. Popularity was meas…
Age-related changes in children's perceptions of aggression and withdrawal in their peers
Current adjustment and family functioning of children behaviorally at risk for adult schizophrenia
Children characterized simultaneously by both aggression and withdrawal form a group particularly at risk for schizophrenia, and such behavioral vulnerability may reflect predisposing factors in the child
