  • Contestation Between the State, Oil and Fishers in Trinidad and Tobago

    Open Access•M S Thompson•ARTICLE•Journal of Agrarian Change•2026

Successive waves of extraction in the Caribbean—from plantation monocultures to oil and gas—have reshaped overlapping agrarian, coastal and marine environments, undermining the socio‐ecological foundations of small‐scale fisher livelihoods and generating ongoing conflict between the state, energy sector and fishing communities. Yet despite the importance of fishing to post‐colonial island economies, these tensions are rarely examined through a po…

  • Alternative visions of "ethical" dairying

    Open Access•M S Thompson•ARTICLE•Agriculture and Human Values•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Few sectors are more ethically contentious than dairy, with debates tending to be polarised between "intensification" and "abolitionist" narratives which often drown out alternative voices operating in-between. This paper examines the marginal spaces occupied by a group of farmers in the United Kingdom who are attempting to move towards what they see as "more ethical" dairying. Drawing on findings from ethnographic research on five farms which ha…

  • Milk and the Motherland? Colonial Legacies of Taste and the Law in the Anglophone Caribbean

    M S Thompson, Merisa Thompson•ARTICLE•Journal of Food Law & Policy•2020

This paper tells a story of the relationship between colonialism and capitalism through the lens of “milk” and “the law” in the Caribbean. Despite high levels of lactose intolerance amongst its population, milk is a regular part of many Caribbean diets and features prominently in its foodscapes. This represents a distinctive colonial inheritance that is the result of centuries of ongoing colonial violence and displacement. Taking a feminist and i…

  • Democratising food

    Open Access•M S Thompson, Alasdair Cochrane et al.•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 44

Prevailing political and ethical approaches that have been used to both critique and propose alternatives to the existing food system are lacking. Although food security, food sovereignty, food justice, and food democracy all offer something important to our reflection on the global food system, none is adequate as an alternative to the status quo. This article analyses each in order to identify the prerequisites for such an alternative approach …

  • Cultivating ‘new’ gendered food producers

    M S Thompson•ARTICLE•Review of International Political…•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 22

This paper advances a critical gendered analysis of the ways in which food-producing identities are constructed and mobilized in Trinidad. Utilizing a historical and intersectional feminist lens, it shows how gendered identities and subjectivities both shape and are shaped by the political economy, and are intimately intertwined with race, class, and nation. The research draws on fieldwork conducted between 2012 and 2016. Through historical analy…

    Open Access•A J B Wace, M S Thompson•ARTICLE•The Annual of the British School…•1912

Although one of the smaller and less well-known cities in Thessaly Halos in Achaia Phthiotis has played an important part in history. Tradition attributes its origin to Athamas, and its position guarding the coast route between Othrys and the sea into the Spercheios valley, brought it on several critical occasions into prominence. In 480 B.C. together with the rest of Thessaly it submitted to Xerxes without a struggle, but in 346 B.C. it withstoo…
