Domestic Building Repair as a Learning Process
This article examines how domestic building repair is represented as a site of experiential learning in Finnish interior design magazines. Situated within heritage studies, the analysis explores how lifestyle media portray the relationships between people, material traces of the past, and the everyday practices of maintaining buildings. The research material consists of interviews with home renovators published in widely circulated home decoratio…
Museonäyttelyt ja -julkaisut rakennussuojelukeskustelussa: Tapauksena Vapriikin kadonneet kaunottaret
Artikkeli käsittelee museon vaikuttamisen keinoja rakennussuojelusta ja rakennusten purkamisesta käytävässä keskustelussa. Pohdimme Museokeskus Vapriikin tuottaman Tampereen kadonneet kaunottaret -näyttelyyn liittyvien aineistojen avulla, miten purettujen rakennusten muistelu vaikuttaa yleisöön ja millaisen roolin museo voi tällaisessa keskustelussa ottaa. Museoilla on rakennettua ympäristöä koskevan tiedon tuottajina ja tallentajina valta vaikut…
The Status of Wood in the Finnish Architectural Heritage
For a long time, wooden architectural heritage has been disregarded in international conservation guidelines and the UNESCO World Heritage List. In the Finnish context, disdain for timber buildings is both endemic and adapted from foreign countries through the international conservation discourse. In searching for the cause of this contempt, this article identifies the underrating of wood in relation to its material performance, timber building t…
Uhasta suojelun kohteeksi ja välineeksi: Ihmisen osallisuus rakennusperintöön rakennussuojelun säädöskielessä
Katsausartikkeli tarkastelee suomalaisten, vuosina 1964, 1985 ja 2010 voimaanastuneiden rakennussuojelulakien suhdetta ihmisen toimintaan ja toimijuuteen. Keskeinen havainto on, että rakennussuojelulakiemme säädöskieli sivuuttaa ihmistoiminnan ja mikäli ihmisen toimintaan viitataan, se nähdään, erityisesti kahdessa ensimmäisessä laissa, ennen kaikkea rakennusperinnön arvoja uhkaavana tekijänä. Kun lakitekstejä ja niiden muutosta seuraamalla voida…
Demolition or adaptation: Post-industrial buildings in Ukraine
Three case studies are presented that assess the post-industrial development of industrial sites in Ukraine. The comparative analysis is based on (1) the geographical location on the territory of the country (Ivano-Frankivsk, Poltava, Kharkiv), (2) the functional transformation of the buildings (from the initial functions to new ones), and (3) the impact on the further development of the urban environment (in urban planning, economic, environment…
Learning from the secondary: Rethinking architectural conservation through 'barn architecture
This article explores material culture and peoples' engagement with built environments from the perspective of vernacular architecture, adaptive reuse and more specifically barn-inspired architecture. Departing from actual cases of conversions that involve material reuse and initiate a correspondence between various more-than-human actors and temporal dimensions, we join the debate around sustainable architecture. We understand sustainability rat…
From obscurity to heritage: Canonisation of the Nordic Wooden Town
Art historian Juan Pablo Bonta has presented a nine-step model for analysing how the interpretation of architectural oeuvres becomes canonised. We suggest that in terms of the built heritage, canonisation and heritagisation are essentially the same process, so Bonta’s model can be used for analysing heritagisation processes. This article testifies to this assumption by examining how the interpretation of historic Nordic wooden towns became stabil…
Teaching Archaeological Heritage Management. Towards a Change in Paradigms
The concept of archaeological heritage management (AHM) has been key to wider archaeological research and preservation agendas for some decades. Many universities and other education providers now offer what is best termed heritage management education (HME) in various forms. The emphasis is commonly on archaeological aspects of heritage in a broad sense and different terms are often interchangeable in practice. In an innovative working-conferenc…
Spolia revisited and extended: The potential for contemporary architecture
In the fields of archaeology, art history and history, spolia have traditionally been studied as phenomena of the past. Today, the reuse of salvaged construction components and materials is primarily justified by its economic and ecological benefits, while its architectural and experiential qualities are much less discussed, if at all. Therefore, this article has two focuses, one more conceptual, and the other, more practical. Firstly, the articl…
