Seeking Baraka
This study aims to reveal the transformation of ngaji practices among Generation X audiences, specifically followers of Gus Baha, from virtual to conventional formats. The rapid development of the internet and social media has significantly influenced religious practices, including the proliferation of virtual ngaji. However, despite the convenience of digital platforms, conventional ngaji remains prevalent. This research employs fieldwork and qu…
Sharia Yes, Sharia State No
Syafiq Hasyim. 2023. Shariatization of Indonesia, the Politics of the Council of Indonesian Ulama (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, MUI). Leiden: Brill. Wael Hallaq. 2013. The Impossible State, Islam, Politics, and Modernity's Moral Predicament. New York: Columbia University Press. The two works discussed in this book review examine how Sharia norms are negotiated and accommodated in modern nation-states. This process is inevitable as Muslims are confron…

Biases in a humorous talk show on religious conversion on youtube
Violations of religious freedom, including the right of religious conversion, often occur in Indonesia, although the state constitution guarantees the right. Several kinds of research indicate that news media has produced discursive violations through texts with certain language styles. Nonetheless, the violation can also happen through humorous language style in social media. This paper aims to discover the discourse behind a humorous talk show …
Gus Yahya and the NU’s New Path
The 34th Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Congress in Lampung was organized in an unusual situation. It was the first kind of NU congress organized in the era of a global pandemic. The date of congress itself was a subject of controversy and debated by competing candidates due to the lockdown, a standard measure taken by the government to control the spread of the Covid-19 virus. There was even an idea to postpone the congress altogether and asked K.H. Said …
Culture, Islamic feminism, and the quest for legal reform in Indonesia
This paper examines the interplay of Islam, history, and feminism and views it in the legal context of Indonesia. I use social movement theory to examine how women’s movements here have organized and mobilized resources to achieve certain goals in this specific socio-political context. This paper sees the Marriage Act 1974 and the Counter-Legal Draft of the Compilation of Islamic Law (CLD) as two relevant examples of how women’s movements have st…
The Rohingya Refugee Crisis and Human Rights
This article will argue that there are three related issues of concern regarding the Rohingya crisis: (1) a singular focus on persecution and nationality in Myanmar; (2) statelessness and displacement in the region; and (3) grave human rights violations amounting to international crimes including genocide and crimes against humanity. This article will discuss active steps that ASEAN should take. To ensure that Myanmar will willingly accept the re…
Penghayat, orthodoxy and the legal politics of the state
Using a dramaturgical perspective and Agama Djawa Sunda (ADS) or Madraisism as a case study, this article attempts to uncover the strategy used by the followers of ‘unofficial religion’ in Indonesia to successfully manage their unrecognised legal status. As a pragmatic response when being repressed, either by religious orthodoxy or the state, ADS utilises a ‘back and forth’ conversion tactic. The ‘front stage’ is the pretense of converting to one…
