Poverty or Racism: Determinants of Disproportionality and Disparity for African American/Black Children in Child Welfare
For decades, the incessantly tethered over-involvement of African American/Black (AA/BL) families with the U.S. Child Welfare System (CWS) has been uniquely troubling. Child welfare researchers have asserted “poverty” over “racism” as the root determinant of the historical disproportionate overrepresentation of AA/BL children in CWS. This commentary explores the extent this assertion holds once an apples-to-apples comparison of poor AA/BL and WH …
Cracks in the Ceiling? Historical and Contemporary Trends of African American Deans of Schools of Social Work
This article presents data from an exploratory study of the demographic and published scholarship profiles of the deans and university provosts of the top 50 schools of social work as ranked by the 2016 U.S. News and World Report ratings. Method: The authors used an exploratory design to conduct a content analysis of the demographic and scholarship characteristics of the deans and provosts of the 50 top schools of social work. Results: The data s…
Social Justice and Civil Rights: A Call to Action for Social Work
This special issue of Social Work, in many ways, offers an opportunity to reflect on the role of the profession in addressing issues of social justice and civil and human rights. It catapults from Social Work’s 1982 Special Issue on Oppression Based on Color, edited by Dr. June Gary, in which matters of social injustice, systemic discrimination, and the language of oppression were applied to “minorities” and examined by a diverse group of scholar…
The Impact and Influence of HBCUs on the Social Work Profession
Faculties at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) have demonstrated stellar contributions to social work, which include early thought and epistemology related to strengths, empowerment, and social justice perspectives; religious orientation; inclusive learning environment, and community-based research. W. E. B. DuBois was the most influential among these HBCU scholars; however, the DuBoisian tradition of scholar as activist must in…
Spirituality and social work practice at historically Black colleges and universities
In 2011 the Council on Social Work Education Religion and Spirituality Work Group was organized “to promote social workers’ knowledge, values, and skills for ethical and effective practice that takes into account the diverse expressions of religion and spirituality among clients and their communities.” In this article we discuss how the mission, charters, and goals of historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) addressed the domains of r…
The Profession's Role in Meeting its Historical Mission to Serve Vulnerable Populations
This article provides an historical account of how the profession of social work met or failed to meet its mission in the provision of services to those who were poor, oppressed, and vulnerable to societal injustices from the mid-twentieth century, including the turbulent Civil Rights Era, to the early twenty-first century. The profession's growth and expansion and the challenge of mediating resistance to change are highlighted based on eyewitnes…
Liminal Living at an Extended Stay Hotel: Feeling "Stuck" in a Housing Solution
As a result of unaffordable housing, many of America's working poor are forced to seek shelter in hotels to avoid homelessness. The concept of liminality has been used in discussions of place to describe the subjective experience of feeling in-between two states of being. Research is scant on the liminal experiences of low-income hotel residents, who are culturally invisible in society. This paper draws from data qualitatively collected via semi-…
Racial Minorities Then and Now: The Continuing Significance of Race
It has been 27 years since the last special issue on racial minorities appeared in Social Work. When the issue appeared in 1982, Jerome Schiele was pursuing an undergraduate degree in sociology at Hampton University. June Gary Hopps was editor of the 1982 special issue and had by then distinguished herself as a social work educator, scholar, and administrator. This generational difference provides an opportunity to reflect on the evolution and st…
A Journey Through the Prism of Race: An Evolution of Generational Consciousness
Race consciousness is examined over the life course of three social work professors of color during different generations. This narrative method illustrates their journey through self-affirming families and communities that served as protective factors against hostile individual, community, and institutional forces that attempted to marginalize, subjugate, and oppress their will. Each experienced similar bouts with racism, albeit in less blatant …
Challenges and Stressors of African American Armed Service Personnel and Their Families
African American armed service personnel and their families bear great burden in times of war in their effort to protect and secure the nation's civil liberties and freedoms. Paradoxically, they have benefited from a system that is arguably more open and inclusive than American civilian society, but at the same time many have suffered hardship and tragedy resulting in ongoing concerns, challenges, and complications. Military families also experie…
From Problems to Personal Resilience: Challenges and Opportunities in Practice with African American Youth
This paper reviews data on select areas relevant to the status, functioning, and general well-being of African American Youth. Practitioners in both policy and clinical intervention must assert a greater role in helping these adolescents grow, develop, and become prepared to take their rightful place in American Society. Attention is afforded the African American Family, particularly Black youth and the threats, both historical and contemporary, …

"Reflections on "Confirmational Response Bias Among Social Work Journals
The preponderance of heat over light generated in and about the Epstein exchanges to date should not be allowed to obscure the underlying issues vital to the intellectual integrity of the profession and its journals.
