Communicating Diagnostic Uncertainty at Emergency Department Discharge
Development of the Uncertainty Communication Checklist
Clear communication with patients upon emergency department (ED) discharge is important for patient safety during the transition to outpatient care. Over one-third of patients are discharged from the ED with diagnostic uncertainty, yet there is no established approach for effective discharge communication in this scenario. From 2017 to 2019, the authors developed the Uncertainty Communication Checklist for use in simulation-based training and ass…
Continuity With Patients, Preceptors, and Peers Improves Primary Care Training
PURPOSE: Infusing continuity of care into medical student clerkships may accelerate professional development, preserve patient-centered attitudes, and improve primary care training. However, prospective, randomized studies of longitudinal curricula are lacking. METHOD: All entering Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine students in 2015 and 2016 were randomized to the Education Centered Medical Home (ECMH), a 4-year, team-based prima…

Integrating Health Literacy in Health Communication
Introduction The public today is exposed to more health information than at any previous time in human history. Health care professionals provide advice, television and radio programs broadcast stories about health and well-being, the Internet delivers nearly unlimited information on numerous health topics, and patients manage communication with their physicians via clinic and hospital Web portals. Exposure to such health information has the pote…

Video Review
Coding transcripts of focus groups is considered standard practice, but transcription is labor intensive and often expensive. In the context of coding answers to specific questions, we compared the feasibility and reliability of reviewing videos and transcripts of focus group discussions. Two teams, each composed of one faculty member and two experienced research assistants, completed the coding. One team watched DVDs of the focus groups, while t…
A System for Rapidly and Accurately Collecting Patients’ Race and Ethnicity
Objectives. We assessed the feasibility of collecting race/ethnicity data from patients using their own preferred racial/ethnic terms. Methods. The 424 patients described their race/ethnicity using their own categories, and we compared their descriptions with their responses to the questions (1) “Do you consider yourself Latino or Hispanic?” and (2) “Which category best describes your race?” (7 response options in our computer interview). We also…
Sexual Regret in College Students
Social norms and expectancy violation theories
College students' processing of alcohol, smoking, and exercise social norms messages, and related effects on judgments, attitudes toward one's own behaviors, and attitudes toward undergraduates' behaviors were examined using social norms marketing and Expectancy Violation Theory (EVT) (N=393). Receiving statistical social norms messages led to an expectancy violation of the perceived social norm (i.e., a discrepancy between the expected and actua…

Pensioners Who Die Soon after Retirement Can Be Discriminated from Survivors by Post-Retirement Activities
Questionnaires were read to the wives of 26 living pensioners and to the widows of 20 age-matched contemporaries who had died within 5 years of retirement. The two groups of men were healthy at retirement and had worked for comparable durations in similar areas of a local mining industry. Only post-retirement measures discriminated the groups. Pensioners who died after retirement demonstrated more decreased interaction with friends, hobby time, a…
