Introduction: Nordic Women And Religious Faith – The Long Nineteenth Century
The Nordic Emancipation Novels of the Mid-Nineteenth Century: Between Lutheran Nationalism and Catholic Calling
Introduction: Nordic Women and Religious Faith
In this special issue of Women's Writing, Nordic women's writing is examined through the lens of religious faith. It is the first of two issues that will bring together 13 studies on various themes related to this subject. They share a focus on women's writing in the Scandinavian countries; prayers, hymns, poems, sermons and novels that reveal directly and indirectly how faith has shaped women and their role in society; and how women have made us…
Nineteenth-Century Nationalisms and Emotions in the Baltic Sea Region: The Production of Loss
Introduction: The Production of Loss
The novel reconsidered: Emotions and anti‐realism in mid‐19th‐century Scandinavian literature
The aim of the present article is to investigate the novel as remediation of nationalist pedagogy: how was the pedagogical, nationalist project charged with emotions? How did elements from non‐realist genres make emotions ‘stick’? And what are, in return, the implications of the use of non‐realist elements for the nationalist project, more specifically for nationalist temporalities? The hybrid novel form allowed for incorporating different kinds …
Places of Longing and Belonging: Memories of the Group Area Proclamation of a South African Fishing Village
Memories of the proclamation in 1967 of the fishing village of Kalk Bay, situated on the False Bay coast of the Cape peninsula, as a ‘white group area’ provide insights into precisely such a complex and manifold history. While the more overt and readily observable consequences of forced removals under the Group Area Act (GAA) in South Africa have been explored through extensive media coverage, museum exhibitions and popular and academic literatur…
It will Keep Circulating: Loving and Letting Go of Things in Swedish Second-hand Markets
Using the case of Sweden, this article examines the growing sector of reuse and second-hand activities from the perspective of how people express and practice their relationships to objects that they acquire from second-hand markets. Drawing on anthropological fieldwork in flea markets, second-hand shops, homes and recycling depots, it explores how people relate to and handle goods which, instead of becoming waste, enter new life cycles through r…

Growing in Motion: The Circulation of Used Things on Second-hand Markets
From having been associated with poverty and low status, the commerce with second-hand goods in retro shops, flea markets, vintage boutiques and trade via Internet is expanding in Sweden as in many countries in the Global North. This article argues that a significant aspect of the recent interest in second-hand and reuse concerns the meaning fulness of circulation in social life. Using classic anthropological theory on how the circulation of mate…

Idioms of Return: Homecoming and Heritage in the Rebuilding of Protea Village, Cape Town
This article analyses ‘heritage’ as a conceptual category among current and former residents affected by the proposed redevelopment of Protea Village, a neighbourhood in Cape Town razed during apartheid. Former residents, who were forcibly resettled in townships on the outskirts of the city on account of being coloured, won their land back through the Land Restitution Programme in 2006. Some 86 families were planning to return. Based on fieldwork…

Anna Bohlin: Memory, Forgetting and the Production of Locality in the New South Africa This article explores remembering and forgetting as a social and cultural process by focussing on the memory of forced removals, carried out during apartheid, in Kalk Bay, a small fishing town in Cape Town, South Africa. Among those who live in the town today, the memory of these removals has largely disappeared. The article argues that the 'forgetting' of thes…
