  • Transformative social performance. A cultural pragmatics of social meaning change

Anibal Gauna, Mario Sánchez Dávila•ARTICLE•Distinktion Journal of Social…•2025•References: 20

This article explores the process of social meaning change within the Strong Program in Cultural Sociology, shifting focus from the reproduction of culture to transformative social performance (TSP) in public displays. Social life often generates identifiable narrative patterns, where certain storylines are elevated to dominant or even official interpretations. In response, counternarrative patterns, iterated through a TSP, emerge to challenge an…

The objective of this article is to propose an explanatory model of the different levels of rejection of (Venezuelans) immigrants, through thirteen mixed interviews carried out in the city of Lima between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. Based on a relational model, it is concluded that, regardless of the direct impact of immigration on the macroeconomy, or the relative levels of crime: (1) there are different levels of generalization o…

  • Genosphobia

    Open Access•Anibal Gauna•ARTICLE•Crossings Journal of Migration…•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 7

In general, xenophobia refers to fear or hatred of the ‘stranger’ and it is recognized as a multivocal term, largely overlapped with ethnocentrism, racism, nationalism, extremism or nativism. In this article, I show that it still has layers of meaning to be explored. Based on thirteen mixed interviews (semi-structured and in-depth) conducted in the city of Lima (Peru), in this work I argue that there is a stratum in the meaning of xenophobia that…

  • Revisiting the Issue of Democratic Deterioration in Venezuela, 1974-1998

    Open Access•Anibal Gauna•ARTICLE•Journal of Politics in Latin…•2017•References: 2

This article examines the issue of democratic deterioration by revisiting the Venezuelan case (1974–1998). Using sequence elaboration and alternative case-focused theories, it tests and confirms the hypothesis that presidential partyarchy was the main contextual explanatory factor behind the crisis that led to Venezuela's democratic deterioration. Building on elite conflict theory, it also aims to integrate previous studies’ insights and better e…

  • Explaining populism beyond Laclau

    Open Access•Anibal Gauna, Aníbal F Gauna•ARTICLE•Thesis Eleven•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Populism has been a rather marginalized notion in mainstream social sciences. In his ambitious work On Populist Reason, renowned theoretician Ernesto Laclau aimed to give the notion a more central role. However, the work is dominated by ungrounded theory. In this article I test the factors that the work identifies as conditions to explaining populism, against the backdrop of three historical cases the work analyzes. I add the case of Chávez and t…
