  • A world beyond this one

    Open Access•Adrienne Ronee Washington•ARTICLE•Journal of Linguistic Anthropology•2024•References: 77

This research advances racioreligious linguistic ideologies as a concept to examine discursive processes whereby language, race, and spirituality become entangled within cultural lenses. It begins by exploring the racialization of Yoruba-inspired (Nagô in Bahia) spiritualities and linguistic/semiotic practices under colonialism and racial slavery. It continues into the modern context with an extended example situated in a northeastern Brazilian s…

  • Their Yoruba Was Pure. It Was Archaic, It Was Native”

Adrienne Ronee Washington•ARTICLE•Journal of Language Identity &…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 16

This research proposes racioreligious linguistic ideologies to conceptualize systems of belief that conflate categories of language, spirituality, and peoplehood, with implications for contemporary education. • Semantic and semiotic flows

    Adrienne Ronee Washington•ARTICLE•Atlantic Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 20

This study investigates Circum-Atlantic linguistic flows as language change and variation among the "n-words." Language users do not experience this set of expressions identically. The words include a racial slur as well as expressions that vary in meaning and use. Applying Spears's discussion of semantic neutralization in tandem with Eckert's indexical field model, this research analyzes ethnographic community data from Pittsburgh AAL and online…

  • Desecrating the Sacred

Adrienne Ronee Washington•ARTICLE•Journal of Africana Religions•2021•Cited by: 2

Comprehensively understanding religious repression requires a critical examination of discursive-linguistic practices, given that language is a semiotic resource for ritual practice and negotiations of religious identity. Language has also been weaponized within colonial domination and religious subjugation because of how religious and linguistic practices intersect. This article explores linguistic appropriation as part of the symbolic and mater…

  • Reclaiming my time’

    Adrienne Ronee Washington•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 16

This article explores how three Black women use the culturally grounded semantic and rhetorical strategies of their discursive practices as modes of symbolic action to negotiate alternative relationships and realities in response to white supremacist patriarchy. Placing intersectional feminist perspectives in conversation with the literature on African American Women’s Language (AAWL), this research applies critical discourse analysis to cases of…
