  • Culture in Textbook Analysis and Evaluation

    Open Access•Germán Canale•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2025

Culture has played an important role in language education for quite some time now. However, to date, there are still heated debates over its definition, its relation with language, and how to better incorporate it in the language teaching curriculum. In the field of applied linguistics, there is a growing number of research addressing culture and culture‐related aspects and their representation in language textbooks. • Managing Character (Homo)Sexuality in English Language Teaching Textbooks

Martina Fernández Fasciolo, Germán Canale•ARTICLE•Gender and Language•2025•References: 5

This study investigates the process of the production of a local English language teaching textbook series in Uruguay. Drawing on ethnographic approaches to critical discourse analysis, the study examines how the sexuality of a male character–initially conceived as openly gay–becomes semiotically regulated at different stages of textbook production, so that his (sexual) identity is managed, controlled, and backgrounded. In addition to the textboo…

  • Neoliberal foreign language education

Pau Bori, Germán Canale•ARTICLE•Critical Inquiry in Language…•2022

In the past decades, neoliberalism has permeated (foreign) language education, as has been discussed by critical research in the fields of: curriculum theory, applied linguistics, discourse analysis, language policy, language assessment, to name a few. Despite the fact that research on foreign language education and neoliberalism is certainly growing, less attention has been paid to actual “ways out” or alternatives to neoliberal foreign language…

  • Gender in EFL Education

    Germán Canale, Victoria Furtado•ARTICLE•Changing English•2021

Long-ingrained views of EFL teaching foreground grammar and language skills as the main goal of learning, backgrounding how the language classroom and materials contribute to (social) knowledge construction. Along these lines, EFL textbooks tend to avoid explicitly -and critically- addressing gender identities: they naturalise and reinforce binary and heteronormative ideologies of gender for which there is a ‘natural’ and unequivocal relation bet…

Teachers report using voseo with almost similar frequency as tuteo ; voseo…
