Netflix's high-end global telefantasy: Conspicuous and virtual localism
Netflix has commissioned and released an increasing number of high-end international series that tap into the genres of science fiction, fantasy and horror. These follow one of two strategies: (1) local productions that engage with local folklore and myths, or (2) productions centred in the 'West', where international talent is brought in to create cosmopolitan 'global' TV events such as 1899 (2022). The first strategy brings together local story…
Streaming women: Hayu, Passionflix and gendered demographics in subscription video-on-demand
The focus of most academic analysis of subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) services so far has been on “first tier” platforms like Netflix and Prime Video. These platforms are spending and charging significant amounts of money to adopt a generalist strategy that rhetorically disregards demographics . However, not all SVODs operate in this manner. This article will consider examples of second (subsidiary) and third (independent) tier SVODs for who…

Predator's Prey: Reframing indigenous representation and Hollywood franchise cinema in the age of SVOD
Hulu's Prey (2022), the fifth installment of the Predator franchise, is set in 1719 and features a Comanche female protagonist. The setting is unlike the 1987 Predator and its sequels, with their hardbody machismo and conservative politics. We argue that Prey is a small but significant step in Hollywood, but its inclusivity comes at a price. Though praised as progressive, it perpetuates a worldview in which Native Americans are ‘noble savages’ an…

This article examines the horror-focused SVOD service “Shudder” to highlight how these genre-specific SVOD services curate co…
The High Court on Constitutional Law: The 2019 Statistics
This article presents data on the High Court’s decision-making in 2019, examining institutional and individual levels of unanimity, concurrence and dissent. It points out distinctive features of those decisions – noting particularly the high frequency of both seven- member benches and the number of cases decided by concurrence over 2019. The latter suggests the possibility of greater judicial individualism re-emerging on the Court despite the cle…

Catholicism in Central and Eastern Europe after Vatican II: Assessing the legacy of John Paul II
Pope John Paul II (2005) called communism an “ ideology of evil”, and fighting it became a centrepiece of his pontificate. As Samuel P. Huntington (1993) argued in his theory of a “third wave” of democratization that occurred after the 1960s, the Church was instrumental in helping Western powers undermine the credibility of the Soviet system, a process that was aided by the Second Vatican Council (1962–1965). Furthermore, Gilles Kepel (1994) and …
