  • A Mixed-Methods Assessment of Energy Insecurity in the United States

Open Access•Ariadna Reyes, Josh Newton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Planning…•2026

Problem, research strategy, and findings An energy-just transition requires research and targeted solutions for energy insecurity. However, national data sets undergirding this work lack the granularity to document energy poverty and physical and behavioral energy insecurity. We present here an index to uncover physical energy insecurity in U.S. regions. Using county tax appraisal district data in Dallas County (TX), the index found 46,422 struct…

  • An Index to Identify and Classify the Spectrum of U.S. Peri-Urban Informal Subdivisions

Open Access•Ariadna Reyes, Josh Newton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Planning Education and…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper proposes a replicable, data-driven index to identify informal subdivisions and measure levels of peri-urban housing informality. Dallas (Texas) and Catawba (North Carolina) county assessment data, a review of the literature, and insights from qualitative research in North Texas yielded variables which were reduced to two factors through exploratory factor analysis. We identified 128 and fifty-three highly informal subdivisions in Dalla…

  • I built it with my own hands: ” A method to assess heterogeneity of housing quality in consolidated informal settlements

Open Access•Ariadna Reyes, Bjørn Sletto et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 22

  • A global analysis of land use regulation, urban form, and greenhouse gas emissions

Open Access•Paavo Monkkonen, Erick Guerra et al.•ARTICLE•Cities•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 37

Cities feature prominently in debates over the existential threat of climate change. Research on urban sustainability, however, has too long been based on national studies from data-rich regions of the world. Fortunately, that is changing as globally harmonized datasets enable new comparative analysis of urban areas. This paper uses new data to address the question - how does urban land policy relate to urban form and greenhouse gas emissions? We…

  • Defining urban boundaries through DBSCAN and Shannon's entropy: The case of the Mexican National Urban System

  • Límites urbanos mediante la teoría de la percolación: El caso del sistema urbano mexicano

    Open Access•Rodrigo Tapia-McClung, Jorge Montejano et al.•ARTICLE•Economía Sociedad y Territorio•2023•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Open Access•Jorge Alberto Montejano Escamilla, Jorge Montejano et al.•ARTICLE•Estudios Demográficos y Urbanos•2018•Cited by: 3•References: 15

  • Contesting Mexico City’s alleged polycentric condition through a centrality-mixed land-use composite index

Open Access•Jorge Montejano, Jorge Montejano Escamilla et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•2016

We examine Mexico City’s urban structure through a composite index by combining two previously existing metrics: one derived from the Urban Network Analysis tool (UNA), recently published by MIT researchers, and the other, using an Entropy Index, which in essence, represents the mixed land-use degree. The proposed composite index embodies a different approach from previous methods reported in the literature because it uses disaggregated data at t…
