  • Mythic symbolic type, utopia, and body without organs

    Open Access•Mina Meir‐dviri, Mina Meir-Dviri•ARTICLE•Semiotica•2019•References: 17

A mythic symbolic type is a binary-structured, gender-oriented cultural mask. Whoever enters it will never exit and will behave according to the mask’s logic. The article focuses on the men of the semi-commune Little Home trapped in the mask. It will examine this cultural structure’s organization of binary-opposition in a unique kind of intensity, I called “masculine waves.” In the final part, a discussion will be presented in the context of Dele…

This framework is the scene of fictional and real kinship relations that play distinct roles within this mini-society and are dominated by symbolic types, which determine their social context. This article examines a ritual of pur…

Mina Meir‐dviri, Mina Meir-Dviri et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Narrative and Life…•1996

Based on fieldwork in a central bus station in Israel, this article focuses on the theme of life stories as an analytical venue into the social world of beggars. Beggars were found to have three statuses, or symbolic types: the handicapped, the prostitute, and the mad. The ethnography describes the interplay between the status and life stories of beggars, and analyzes how life stories are changed vis-a-vis a beggar's change of status. (Sociology,…

  • Rituals of Exchange in the Social World of Israeli Beggars

    Open Access•Mina Meir‐dviri, A E Raz•ARTICLE•Symbolic Interaction•1995•Cited by: 5•References: 19

Based on a fieldwork in a central bus station in Israel, this study offers a novel consideration of the symbolic interactions underlying processes of communication, social exchange, and status attainment among beggars. The case study presents a possible alternative to sociological analyses of beggary as 'deviant activity' by drawing upon the constructs of social-world perspective and symbolic types
