The Association of Substance Use Before Sex and Condomless Sex: The Moderating Effects of Sexual Risk Behaviors, Perceived Sex Approval, and HIV/STI Risk Perception Among Youth
Youth are disproportionately affected by substance use and associated sexual risk behaviors, increasing STI and HIV susceptibility. This study analyzed the interplay between alcohol/drug use before sex (ABS/DBS), perceived sex approval (e.g., perceived familial or peer approval in engaging in sex), and HIV/STI risk perception among youth aged 13-21 ( n = 150). We assessed how these factors influenced condomless vaginal/anal sex (VAS) and oral sex…
Associations between adolescent alcohol use and neurocognitive functioning in young adulthood
This study examined the associations between excessive alcohol intake during adolescence and neurocognitive functioning in young adulthood and whether these relations varied by sex. Participants were working-class Chilean adolescents ( N = 692; M age 16.0 years; 54.5% female) who provided frequency of past 30-day bingeing and past-year intoxication. Neurocognitive measures were completed in young adulthood ( M age 21.2 years). Illicit substance u…

Risk taking, sensation seeking and personality as related to changes in substance use from adolescence to young adulthood
INTRODUCTION: This study examined changes in substance use from adolescence to young adulthood as related to adolescents' risk taking, sensation seeking, antisocial activities, and personality traits. METHODS: Chilean youth (N = 890, 52% female) were studied in adolescence (14.5 and 16.2 years) and young adulthood (M age 21.3 years). Risk taking was assessed via a laboratory-based performance task (Balloon Analogue Risk Task), and self-administer…
Adolescent Internalizing, Externalizing, and Social Problems Following Iron Deficiency at 12–18 Months: The Role of Maternal Responsiveness
This study tested whether maternal responsiveness moderated or mediated pathways from iron deficiency (ID) at 12–18 months to adolescent behavior problems. Participants were part of a large Chilean cohort (N = 933). Iron status was assessed at 12 and 18 months. Maternal responsiveness was assessed at 9 months and 5 years. Parents reported their child’s symptomology at 5 years, 10 years, and adolescence (11–17 years; M = 14.4). Structural equation…

It Works, But For Whom? Examining Racial Bias in Carding Experiences and Acceptance of a County Identification Card
Purpose: Policies that restrict access to U.S. government-issued photo identification (ID) cards adversely affect multiple marginalized communities. This context impedes access to health-promoting resources that increasingly require government-issued IDs and exacerbates health inequities. In 2015, Washtenaw County, Michigan, implemented the Washtenaw ID to improve access to resources contingent upon having an ID. We employed an audit study to exa…
Psychotropic Medication Use in Children: What Role Does Child Adversity Play
Early life adversity has been associated with an increased use of mental health services and psychotropic medications among adults. However, the impact of early life adversity on children has received considerably less attention, with no studies accounting for both need for services and access and utilization of health care. To address this, the present study used data from the 2011–2012 National Survey of Children’s Health (N = 79,817) to examin…
Raising Children Amid the Threat of Deportation: Perspectives from Undocumented Latina Mothers
Despite the large number of families with at least one undocumented parent, little research has investigated mothering amid the threat of immigration enforcement. We present results of a community-based participatory study with 7 Latina mothers who describe their experiences of parenting while navigating the possibility of deportation. Undocumented mothers found meaning in caring for their children. Yet due to restrictions related to immigration …
Infant iron deficiency, child affect, and maternal unresponsiveness: Testing the long-term effects of functional isolation
Children who are iron deficient (ID) or iron-deficient anemic (IDA) have been shown to seek and receive less stimulation from their caregivers, contributing to functional isolation . Over time, the reduced interactions between child and caregiver are thought to interfere with the acquisition of normative social competencies and adversely affect the child's development. The current study examined functional isolation in children who were ID or IDA…
Gender differences in psychological factors shaping smoking decisions of Chilean adolescents
This study examined gender differences in how internalizing and externalizing symptoms affect adolescents' decisions about smoking in Chile, where girls smoke at some of the highest rates in the world. In multivariate logistic regression analyses with 607 adolescents, internalizing symptoms, such as depressed mood and anxiety, predicted smoking among girls more than boys, with girls who were low in internalizing symptoms being more likely to smok…
Health Implications of an Immigration Raid: Findings from a Latino Community in the Midwestern United States
Immigration raids exemplify the reach of immigration law enforcement into the lives of Latino community members, yet little research characterizes the health effects of these raids. We examined the health implications of an immigration raid that resulted in multiple arrests and deportations and occurred midway through a community survey of a Latino population. We used linear regression following principal axis factoring to examine the influence o…

Pathways to Adolescent Depression and Cigarette Smoking: A Longitudinal Investigation of Chilean Mothers and Their Children
Scant research has been conducted in Latin America regarding the influence of maternal depression on adolescent risk behaviors. To better understand the link between maternal influences on youth outcomes with Latin American families, the longitudinal influence of maternal depression and smoking on adolescent smoking and depressive symptoms was examined with a sample from Santiago, Chile. Participants were 659 mother–adolescent pairs (adolescent m…
Spirituality and Alcohol Consumption among Adolescents in Chile: Results of Propensity Score Stratification Analyses
This article presents the results of a study conducted to prospectively assess the relationship between spirituality and number of alcoholic drinks among Chilean adolescents while controlling for extraneous factors. A convenience sample of 661 adolescent–parent pairs from Santiago, Chile, completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire between 2007 and 2010, when adolescents were 12 to 17 years old), and between 2008 and 2011, when they were …
Estimating the Heterogeneous Relationship between Peer Drinking and Youth Alcohol Consumption in Chile Using Propensity Score Stratification
When estimating the association between peer and youth alcohol consumption, it is critical to account for possible differential levels of response to peer socialization processes across youth, in addition to variability in individual, family, and social factors. Failure to account for intrinsic differences in youth's response to peers may pose a threat of selection bias. To address this issue, we used a propensity score stratification method to e…
Ecological Factors and Adolescent Marijuana Use: Results of a Prospective Study in Santiago, Chile
The findings suggest that "poverty", "crime", and "drug problems" may not be synonyms and thus can be understood discretely. As Latin American countries re-examine their drug policies, especially those concerning decriminalizing marijuana use, the findings suggest that attempts to reduce adolescent marijuana use in disadvantaged neighborhoods may do best if efforts are concentrated on specific features of the "substance abuse environment

We thank McCarthy and colleagues for their interest in our work. We agree that immigrant generational status is important, and we also agree that the various Hispanic groups differ in their status. Indeed, we recognize that there are many differences between the groups; it was for this reason we conducted separate analyses for adolescents of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and “other Latin American” ancestries. As McCarthy and colleagues note, we f…
