  • Carl Schmitt's Enemies: Context for a Critique of Political Theology

    Philip A Michelbach, Andrew Poe•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2022

Carl Schmitt famously charged that "All significant concepts of the modern theory of the state are secularized theological concepts..." We contend that this argument has not been taken seriously enough in its historical, systematic, or tendentious intent. Using his 1956 essay " Hamlet oder Hecuba ," we offer a contextualization of Schmitt's late political theology. Tracing the sectarian elements revealed here against their alternatives, we demons…

  • Un-represent: Theorizing the reason of political fanaticism

    Andrew Poe•ARTICLE•Distinktion Journal of Social…•2021•References: 5

Recent theorizing on the concept of fanaticism has paid much attention to the identity of fanatics. Viewed in this way, fanaticism becomes a degradation, employed in the naming of existential political enemies. This political labelling helps foster identification, delineating the parameters of civility and extremism. And, in a politics that privileges compromise and sympathy, such parameters might be essential. Yet what results is a theory of fan…

  • The End of Emergency: Coronavirus, Uncertain Bodies, and Agitating Sovereignty

    Andrew Poe•ARTICLE•Theory & Event•2020

Emergencies are those risks of threat too high to ignore. Recently, democratic theorists have worried that the emergency use of powers is itself the fundamental emergency of democratic politics. But this paper asks whether other modalities of emergency may not also be useful for democracy. I argue that the recent emergency of the COVID-19 pandemic, while horrific, can also provide the opportunity for developing new democratic habitus. I offer ref…

  • Expressions of a Fascist Imaginary

    Andrew Poe•ARTICLE•South Atlantic Quarterly•2018•References: 11

What is the structure of prejudice? In his 1951 essay, “Freudian Theory and the Pattern of Fascist Propaganda,” Theodor Adorno reflects on the mass psychological basis of fascism. Within that psychology, he identifies a logic of ego “enlargement,” which relates directly to the structure of prejudice. Fascism depends on affective attachments, magnified by prejudice (a magnification that takes place through identification with a leader). This is a …

  • New authority: Hamlet’s politics with (and against) Carl Schmitt

Philip A Michelbach, Andrew Poe•ARTICLE•Journal for Cultural Research•2016

Carl Schmitt’s political thought has attained centrality in contemporary discussions of authority. Despite this, his complicated view of the interaction between religion and politics remains less well explored. We argue that his 1956 essay Hamlet oder Hekuba is essential to an understanding of Schmitt’s thought on authority because it is precisely this nexus of religion and politics which is at stake in his Hamlet reading. Schmitt depicts Shakesp…

  • Enthusiasm and the Metaphor of Revolution

    Open Access•Andrew Poe•ARTICLE•Law Culture and the Humanities•2013

This article explores the metaphoric content latent in modern conceptions of revolution. Originary theories of modern revolutions relied explicitly on Copernicus’ rethinking of the movements of celestial bodies. There, spectators were significant in characterizing the logic of revolutions despite the appearances of things, revealing a new center of the universe distinct from their own location. Contemporary political theories of revolution obscur…
