  • The Role of Business Training in Improving Digital Financial Literacy: Evidence from a Field Experiment for Subsistence Women Entrepreneurs

Ashish Desai, Rudra Sensarma et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Development•2025•References: 1

Women’s empowerment comes from their ability to exercise choice to achieve well-being outcomes through access to resources (pre-conditions) and agency. Resource and agency together constitute capabilities that enable poor women in developing countries to take up subsistence entrepreneurship. This paper explores whether subsistence women entrepreneurs can enhance their digital financial literacy agencies, which include numeracy, financial knowledg…

  • Roles of financial literacy and entrepreneurial orientation in economic empowerment of rural women entrepreneurs

Ashish Desai, Rudra Sensarma et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Development Studies•2024

Policy makers, particularly in developing countries, view entrepreneurship as a stepping stone for achieving women’s economic empowerment. However, simply attaching women to the labour market and providing them access to financial resources may not transform their economic well-being unless it is accompanied by agencies such as financial literacy and entrepreneurial orientation. In this context, we empirically test the seminal theoretical framewo…

  • Confluence of Health and Financial Policies for Development: A Study of Collaborative Governance in Maternal Health Delivery

Sanjukta Sarkar, Rudra Sensarma•ARTICLE•International Journal of Public…•2024

Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a public health programme in India involving multiple stakeholders across sectors with the common goal of reducing mother and infant mortality by boosting institutional deliveries. Under JSY, pregnant women receive financial assistance in the form of cash transfers into their bank accounts. Using data from the latest National Family Health Survey providing a sample of 15,968 poor women, we show that Financial inclu…

  • The role of liquidity in monetary policy transmission: Evidence from Indian banks 1

    Open Access•Gyasuddin Ansari, Rudra Sensarma•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2023•References: 2

The role of bank liquidity in monetary policy transmission has received insufficient attention in the literature. Faced with monetary tightening, banks with more liquidity can sell off securities and protect their loan portfolios. We test this proposition using panel data for Indian banks during 2005–2020. Employing dynamic threshold panel regressions with liquid assets as the threshold variable, we show that bank lending declines with monetary p…

  • Liquidity creation channel of monetary policy transmission in India: Do bank characteristics matter?1

    Open Access•Gyasuddin Ansari, Rudra Sensarma•ARTICLE•International Social Science…•2023•References: 50

In this paper, we examine the effect of monetary policy on liquidity creation (LC) by banks in India. We also study the role of bank characteristics in the transmission of monetary policy to LC. We apply static and dynamic panel regressions to bank-level data from India, spanning the period 1999-2020. We find a negative impact of monetary policy tightening on total as well as on-balance sheet LC. We also find that the capital, size and profit of …

  • Is rural household debt sustainable in a financially included region? Evidence from three districts of Kerala, India

Remya Tressa Jacob, Rudra Sensarma et al.•ARTICLE•Oxford Development Studies•2022

This paper explores whether institutional change brought about by financial inclusion results in sustainable debt management by households. We analyze household indebtedness and its various dimensions using primary data collected from 600 households across 3 districts of rural Kerala in India. We find that more than half of the sample households are indebted. Using flow and stock analysis, we assess the repayment capacity of households. While the…

  • Risk preferences estimation of exporting firms under exchange rate uncertainty

Open Access•Udo Broll, Удо Бролл et al.•ARTICLE•Scottish Journal of Political…•2019

This note empirically analyses how exchange rate fluctuations affects firms’ optimal production and exporting decisions. A firm’s elasticity of risk aversion determines the direction of the impact of exchange rate risk on exports. Based on a flexible utility function that incorporates all possible risk preferences, a unique structurally estimable equation is derived. Quantile regression method is used to estimate this equation and compute the ris…
