    The Navajo people of Canyon de Chelly must negotiate a delicate balance between the old and the new as they struggle to maintain their traditions in the midst of ongoing change.     I was living over in del Muerto side back then, that's where I was born, when word started coming down that the government was going to put a fence around the whole canyon... (Lifelong resident of Canyon de Chelly, commenting recently on its 1931 designation as a National Monument.)
