The Congruent and Incongruent Effects of Emotions on Willingness to Communicate
Although some prior studies examined how language learners’ enjoyment and anxiety affect L2 willingness to communicate (WTC), they predominantly employed linear statistical methods and largely ignored the possible curvilinear relationships. Adopting a polynomial regression with response surface analysis, the study intends to unveil the congruent and incongruent effects of two emotional factors (enjoyment and anxiety) on WTC among a total of 1,023…
Grit, future selves, and intended learning effort as predictors of L2 achievement
Foreign language (FL) learning is a lengthy and complex process that is permeated with diverse challenges, which require learners to possess grit, a clear vision of their future selves, and intended learning effort (ILE) to overcome any setbacks encountered during the learning process. However, there is a lack of studies examining how grit, future selves, and ILE jointly influence English language performance. Drawing on unidirectional path analy…
From theory to data
This paper presents a corpus-based study that evaluates variables identified introspectively by Berthonneau (2002) in relation to the alternation between two French synonymous: prochain (‘next’ or ‘upcoming’) and suivant (‘following’ or ‘next’). Employing a multifactorial and behavioural profiles approach, we explore the asymmetry in their temporal and spatial applications. Our findings highlight distinct uses with temporal nouns, whereas uses wi…
Data‐Driven Learning
This study explores the potential of data‐driven learning (DDL) as a complement to traditional coursebooks for multilingual learners of French as a foreign language. Motivated by the need to address insufficiencies in coursebooks, such as oversimplified and misrepresented grammar rules, the study aims to examine how DDL facilitates the learning of French, focusing on adjective placement. To investigate this, the study employed a mixed‐methods exp…

Covid-19 W Krajobrazie Językowym Włoch I Malezji
Linguistic landscape in Kuala Lumpur international airport, Malaysia
This article presents the results of a small-scale study on the linguistic landscape in the two terminals of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Thirty-one digital photos of non-identical signs out of a total of 368 ‘top-down’ signs identified in the public space were collected, and questionnaires were administered to airport users to gauge their attitudes towards the languages used on the multilingual signs in the two airports. The findings …
Language vitality among the Orang Asli of Malaysia
After a general introduction to the aboriginals of Peninsular Malaysia, the so-called Orang Asli, this article introduces the ethnic group upon which the research focused: the Mah Meri, a Senoi group living in the state of Selangor, not far from Kuala Lumpur. The research is based on a survey on language use and attitudes carried out in four different Mah Meri villages on Carey Island. The results are then analysed in general terms and compared w…
