    Open Access•Thomas I Vaughan-Johnston, Karen E MacGregor et al.•ARTICLE•Personality and Social Psychology…•2021

Four experiments explored how extraversion’s connection with self-esteem may depend on specific self-enhancement strategies. Participants’ self-esteem threatening feedback indicating that they had performed poorly on a vocabulary or emotional intelligence test. In Experiment 1, participants ( N = 80) were randomly assigned to either a control condition (no self-enhancement) or a downward social comparison condition. The procedures for Experiments…

Undergraduate women ( N = 143) completed self-reports on exercise behavior, body orientation, body appreciation, and body-related talk. Results showed that conversations about weight loss/dieting and conversations about exercise differentially predicted body appreciation. Importantly, multiple regression analyses showed that the relationship between talk type and body appreciation was explained by the object-process dichotomy: Conversations about…

Open Access•Louise Wasylkiw, Leandre R Fabrigar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality•2010

Two studies examined the moderating role of neuroticism in discrepancy-emotion relations. In Study 1, neuroticism, self-discrepancies, and depression were measured. Multiple regression analyses revealed a significant interaction between neuroticism and ideal self-discrepancies such that the magnitude of ideal self-discrepancies was a stronger predictor of depression for people high in neuroticism than people low in neuroticism. Study 2 used an ex…

  • Media images of men

    Jamie C Farquhar, Louise Wasylkiw•ARTICLE•Psychology of Men & Masculinity•2007•Cited by: 14•References: 9

In the current investigation, the authors examined how men are presented in popular media and the effects of such presentations on male adolescents’ self-evaluations. In a content analysis of male models in advertisements of Sports Illustrated, Study 1 showed that media ideals increasingly emphasize aesthetic versus performance attributes of men. In Study 2, male adolescents (N 107) were randomly assigned to view either images of male ideals emph…

  • Associations between the Holden Psychological Screening Inventory and the Personality Assessment Screener in a Nonclinical Sample

    Open Access•Ronald R Holden, Louise Wasylkiw et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•2001

Associations between two screening inventories of psychopathology were investigated using a sample of 156 first-year undergraduates. Analyses supported the reliability and validity of all Holden Psychological Screening Inventory scales, but only of some of the Personality Assessment Screener scales. Orthogonal dimensions of Depression, General Distress, and Antisocial Tendencies represented the common latent structure of the two inventories

  • Conflicts and missed signals in psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and Gestalt psychology

    D J Murray, Andrea R Kilgour et al.•ARTICLE•American Psychologist•2000

At the turn of the 20th century, European psychologists found themselves in conflict situations with respect to the role that private mental states should play in a scientific psychology. Out of this conflict arose 3 of the best-known schools of the 20th century: psychoanalysis, behaviorism, and Gestalt psychology. Each of these schools is discussed with respect to two characteristics. First, the authors discuss the attitude of each school on the…
