  • The prevalence of negative weight commentary in girls sport and associations with body image and well-being in young adulthood

    Open Access•Kristen M Lucibello, Madison F Vani et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2025•References: 36

This study examined the prevalence of negative weight commentary across girls sport sources, and the association between weight commentary and body image (appearance and fitness shame, guilt, envy, embarrassment, pride) and psychological well-being (depression, internalized weight bias, self-esteem) in young adulthood. Women who played adolescent sport [ N = 124, M age = 21.48 (1.39)] retrospectively reported experiences of negative weight commen…

  • Factors associated with prospective changes in weight control intentions among adolescents

Open Access•Kristen M Lucibello, 司朗 三宅 et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2024

Findings can inform targeted intervention and prevention strategies to disrupt maladaptive changes in weight control intentions among high-risk subgroups.

  • Do sociodemographic risk profiles for adolescents engaging in weekly e-cigarette, cigarette, and dual product use differ

Open Access•Kate Battista, Katelyn Battista et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2024

This study used a novel modelling approach (CART) to identify combinations of sociodemographic characteristics that profile high-risk groups for exclusive e-cigarette and dual-product use. Unique risk profiles were identified, suggesting that e-cigarettes are attracting new demographics of adolescents who have not previously been considered as high-risk for traditional cigarette use

  • Predictors of Food and Physical Activity Tracking Among Young Adults

    Open Access•Erin K O’loughlin, Maryam Marashi et al.•ARTICLE•Health Education & Behavior•2023

BACKGROUND: Monitoring food intake and physical activity (PA) using tracking applications may support behavior change. However, few longitudinal studies identify the characteristics of young adults who track their behavior, findings that could be useful in designing tracking-related interventions. Our objective was to identify predictors of past-year food and PA tracking among young adults. METHODS: Data were available for 676 young adults partic…

  • Body‐related shame disrupts attentional focus over time in adolescence

    Open Access•Madison F Vani, Kristen M Lucibello et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2023

INTRODUCTION: Body-related shame is a negative self-conscious emotion that is heightened during adolescence and is associated with several adverse outcomes. Of particular interest, and informed by Objectification Theory, body-related shame may impact attentional focus because the experience of this intense emotion may limit cognitive resources required to effectively engage in tasks. The purpose of the present study was to examine the association…

  • Associations among physical activity tracking, physical activity motivation and level of physical activity in young adults

    Open Access•Erin K O’loughlin, Catherine M Sabiston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2022•Cited by: 3•References: 53

Whether physical activity (PA) tracking devices are associated with PA motivation in young adults is largely unknown. We compared total PA minutes per week, total minutes walking/week, meeting moderate-to vigorous PA guidelines, and past-year activity tracking across motivation cluster profiles among 799 young adults. Participants with "self-determined" profiles reported the highest total PA minutes/week followed by participants with "low intrins…

  • Body image self-conscious emotions get worse throughout adolescence and relate to physical activity behavior in girls and boys

    Open Access•Catherine M Sabiston, Isabelle Doré et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2022•Cited by: 7•References: 66

  • Exploring adolescent girls’ experiences of body talk in non‐aesthetic sport

Open Access•Kristen M Lucibello, Alyona Koulanova et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2021

INTRODUCTION: Body image concerns may contribute to poor sport experiences and low sport participation in girls. Objectification theory and evidence from studies in non-sport contexts suggests body talk may elicit an environment that fosters negative body image. However, the phenomenon of body talk within adolescent girls sport is not well-understood from an in-depth person-centered perspective. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to …
