Addendum to: A Middle Palaeolithic workshop at Andornaktálya-Marinka site (Northeast Hungary)
First Open-Air Mousterian Site in the Mátra Mountains (North Hungary): Preliminary Results from Szurdokpüspöki-Lapos-tanya
The recently documented open-air site of Szurdokpüspöki-Lapos-tanya in the Western Mátra Mountains represents an occurrence of the Middle Palaeolithic Mousterian industry in the North Hungarian Range. The site was identified in the 1980s by László Tóth, an agronomist from Pásztó, and visited again by the authors in November 2024. The total assemblage comprises 679 lithic artefacts made almost exclusively of limnic silicites, most likely of local …
Examination of anthropogenic traces on Pleistocene bone material from the Upper Cave of the Remete Valley and revision of the fauna
At the beginning of the last century, during the heyday of Hungarian cave excavations, only a selected part of the faunal remains found in caves was collected and preserved due to the applied excavation methods and the approach used. Thus, these bone assemblages from the early excavation period offer limited opportunities for examining traces of anthropogenic origin. However, among the caves excavated in the second half of the 20th century, there…
A Middle Palaeolithic workshop at Andornaktálya-Marinka site (Northeast Hungary)
Although many Palaeolithic open-air sites are known on the foothills of the Bükk Mountains near Eger, Andornaktálya-Marinka was only discovered in 2014 thanks to new vine plantations on a hilltop. It was prospected regularly until 2019, and a test excavation was carried out in 2018. The archaeological material consists of a few undiagnostic prehistoric ceramic sherds and daub fragments, and 1706 stone artefacts. Except two fragments of polished a…

Zöld Cave and the Late Epigravettian in Eastern Central Europe
Zöld Cave is a recently discovered Late Epigravettian site in Hungary. It yielded a small archaeological collection dated to 17.0–14.9 ka cal BP. The findings consists of faunal remains of horse and reindeer bearing extensive marks of human activity, and lithic artifacts of hunting armature types, including curved backed points, backed truncated bladelets, and backed bladelet, typical for a Late Epigravettian tool inventory. The archeozoological …
Preliminary report on the excavation at Andornaktálya-Marinka in 2018
Andornaktálya-Marinka is among the several Palaeolithic archaeological sites in the region of Eger, on the foothills of the Bükk Mountains, North-Eastern Hungary. It is situated on the top of a 234 m high elevation located between the villages Andornaktálya and Ostoros. The site was discovered in 2014 by Ferenc Cserpák. Surface collections yielded by several field surveys show two kinds of archaeological material: one is signified mostly by a bif…
New Perspectives on the Problems of the Exploitation Area and the Prehistoric Use of the Buda Hornstone in Hungary
The mountainous areas of the Carpathian basin have provided a wide spectrum of siliceous rocks for prehistoric people. Although the presence of outcrops of a kind of chert, named Buda hornstone was already known by geological and petrographic investigations, the developing Hungarian petroarchaeological research did not pay much attention to this raw material. Its archaeological perspectives have been opened by a discovery made at the Denevér stre…
