  • Framing modernity: Gender, vision, and colonial ideology in Le Corbusier’s visual rhetoric

    Open Access•Hulya Dogan•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2026

This study examines Le Corbusier’s drawings from the colonial period through the lenses of gender, visual culture, and colonial ideology. It approaches early twentieth-century modernism not merely as an aesthetic transformation but as an ideological arena where gaze, body, and power were renegotiated. Unlike studies that focus on Le Corbusier’s architectural projects or theoretical writings, this research fills a gap by analysing how his drawings…

  • Planning mobility across regimes: The Hijaz Railway and the electric tramway in Damascus from the late Ottoman to the Mandate era, 1900–1940

    Open Access•Hulya Dogan•ARTICLE•Middle Eastern Studies•2026

This study examines how the Hijaz Railway and the electric tramway functioned as connected infrastructures through which mobility was planned and urban space was reorganised in Damascus from the late Ottoman to the Mandate era. Rather than considering rail and tram as separate transport histories, it analyses them as linked systems connecting stations, squares, boulevards, streets and emerging urban districts. It argues that, in the late Ottoman …

  • From representation to operation: Railway campuses as instruments of mobility planning in the late Ottoman Empire, 1900–1918

    Hulya Dogan•ARTICLE•Planning Perspectives•2026

This study examines the Hejaz Railway as a multifunctional planning apparatus that organised movement, resources, and populations in the late Ottoman Empire. Rather than analysing stations as isolated architectural objects, the study conceptualises them as multi-component ‘railway campuses’ shaped by distinct planning rationalities. Based on a comparative analysis of recurring spatial components along the Damascus–Medina corridor, the research id…

    Hulya Dogan•ARTICLE•Planning Perspectives•2026

In early modern Turkey (1923–1945), the newly established state placed a strong emphasis on modern planning approaches in architectural and urban design to shape a contemporary urban identity. The planning of Atatürk Forest Farm, an urban farm that integrated sports and recreational spaces with leisure activities, materialized an extraordinary spatial practice to create a modern and secular society. The study aims to examine the planned social sp…

  • An Archaeology of the Industrial Landscape: The Industrial History and Heritage of the Belemedik–Hacıkırı Railway Construction Corridor

    Open Access•Hulya Dogan•ARTICLE•Industrial Archaeology Review•2026

This article interprets the Belemedik–Hacıkırı section of the Baghdad Railway that crosses the Taurus Mountains in southern Turkey as a railway construction landscape. While previous scholarship has largely focused on individual engineering structures or the political economy of the railway, the construction corridor has rarely been analysed within the framework of industrial archaeology as an integrated industrial system. Drawing on archival sou…

  • Industrial heterotopias and Republican modernity: Planning the Sümerbank landscape for social ordering in early Republican Türkiye

    Hulya Dogan, Hasan Doğan•ARTICLE•Planning Perspectives•2026

This article explores Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, first introduced in his 1967 lecture ‘Of Other Spaces’, as a theoretical lens to examine the spatial logic of modern industrial landscapes. It argues that heterotopia offers a productive framework for understanding state-planned industrial environments that emerged as ‘other spaces’ beyond the conventional urban fabric. Focusing on Sümerbank industrial campuses – a series of state-le…

Ahıska Turks are a dispersed community without a nation‐state and, similar to other ethnic minorities of the former Soviet Union, their political powerlessness rendered them subject to persecution under Stalinist rule. Most of the Ahıska Turks interviewed for this study identify themselves both ethnically and nationally with Turkey, but their cultural geographic focus lies in present‐day Georgia. By incorporating qualitative data collected throug…

Bu bağlamda modern çağın getirdiği ihtiyaçlar neticesinde oluşan icraatlar, işçilerin hak taleplerinde bulunmasına ve bazı karışıklıkların ortaya çıkmasına sebebiyet vermiştir. Devletin ortaya çıkan yeni durumlar karşısında, nasihat yolu, kuvvet k…
