  • A Critical Sister

    Open Access•Naw Pe The Law, Sofie Mortensen et al.•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•2026•References: 50

The role of women’s organizations in producing public authority, and, conversely, the role of public authority in (re)producing gender norms, is often overlooked. Drawing on the case of the Karen Women’s Organisation (KWO) serving the Karen National Union (KNU) and the Karen people in Myanmar, we aim to understand how the gendered work of women’s organizations and women are included and excluded, as well as recognized and invisibilized, in the pe…

  • Visualizing nature

    Open Access•Sofie Mortensen, Francois Questiaux et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2025•References: 40

Originally developed in the field of public health, the participatory photography research methodology known as “photovoice” has increasingly been used by interdisciplinary environmental scientists. This scoping review assesses this trend, identifying and analyzing 132 relevant journal articles to evaluate how researchers deploy this methodology to understand environmental change processes and perceptions. We find that photovoice has been applied…

  • Labour Abroad as a Struggle for Land

    Open Access•Sofie Mortensen•ARTICLE•Antipode•2025•Cited by: 2•References: 57

This article examines land struggles that take place outside of the land in question, in order to show that rural youth continue to have an interest in rural and agrarian life despite out‐migration. Through life‐story interviews and photovoices with young Myanmar migrants in Thailand's agriculture and tourism sectors, the article shows how rural land serves as the material and emotional basis for young migrants’ imagined futures. Indeed, the vast…

  • Extending the ethnographic toolbox

    Sofie Mortensen, Francois Questiaux•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2025•Cited by: 3•References: 75

This paper explores how photovoice can be used to understand the everyday life experiences of marginalised groups. We ask what kind of knowledge photovoice elicits and how this contributes to other ethnographic methods to enhance our understanding of subjective experiences. Based on two photovoice projects in Ghana/Burkina Faso and Thailand we show that participants generate aesthetic accounts of their everyday life that are both poetic and emoti…

  • Rightless rurality

    Open Access•Sofie Mortensen•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2024•Cited by: 6•References: 49

This paper explores relations of production in contemporary agrarian capitalism through the case of rural-rural migration from Myanmar to Thailand. It focuses on the often-overlooked rural proletariat, in this case, illegalized migrant laborers. It shows how migrants live and work in precarity, and argues that their social position is a result of practices of illegalization deployed by state authorities, local police, and farmers, which control a…

  • Displaced by climate and disaster-induced relocations

Open Access•Karlee Johnson, Sofie Mortensen et al.•ARTICLE•Disasters•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 63

Disasters and climate-related risks displace millions of people each year. Planned relocation is one strategy used to address displacement. However, little attention has been paid to the secondary impacts of planned relocations, and how they influence the risk, vulnerability, and well-being of other groups, particularly people who live on the land selected for relocation sites, or in neighbouring areas. This paper explores how current and potenti…

  • Intersectionality and energy transitions

    Open Access•Oliver Johnson, Oliver W Johnson et al.•ARTICLE•Energy Research & Social Science•2020

Transitions to low-carbon energy systems are essential to meeting global commitments to climate change mitigation. Yet “greening” energy systems may not make them any fairer, inclusive or just. In this paper, we review the academic literature to understand the state of knowledge on how diffusion of low-carbon technologies impacts gender and social equity in intersectional ways. Our findings indicate that renewable energy projects alone cannot ach…

  • Agricultural and food systems in the Mekong region

    Open Access•R Friend, Richard M Friend et al.•ARTICLE•Emerald Open Research•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 22

Agricultural and food systems in the Mekong Region are undergoing transformations because of increasing engagement in international trade, alongside economic growth, dietary change and urbanisation. Food systems approaches are often used to understand these kinds of transformation processes, with particular strengths in linking social, economic and environmental dimensions of food at multiple scales. We argue that while the food systems approach …
