Sex Differences in Sociology Specializations, 1975–1985: Women's Liberation to Ghetto Specialization
This report explores the division of labor by sex in sociology. Using the Guide to Graduate Departments for the years 1975, 1980 and 1985, first-cited specialty areas for all women and a one-fifth sample for men were obtained. Comparison of these specialty areas for women and men suggests that a division of labor by sex exists in sociology. Further, the correlations between specialty areas for men and women are decreasing over time, indicating an…
Social Relativity: The Motion of Groups and Actors
The bulk of sociological theory is based on a notion of “state”: mechanical-organic solidarity, feudalism, capitalism, socialism, folk-urban, and so forth. We propose a theory that social systems consist of actors and groups in constant motion. Further, we propose that the duality of actor and society generate a system that can be understood by using the concepts of complementarity, indeterminacy and the principle of relativity. Such a system is …
Freedom and Monastery Life
The dimensions of freedom are examined as they relate to life in the monastery. Monks, when compared to other groups, are found to score low on ego freedom and conditional freedom, but high on disciplined freedom. The impact of disciplined freedom on the level of cohesion, alienation, and deprivation of freedom are examined, and the monks are found to be high on cohesion and low on alienation and deprivation of freedom. This is true despite their…
A Theory of Integration and Freedom
The relation betwee freedom and social integration is examined using the theories of Landecker and of Kolb. Data are from a purposive sample of 25 communal and formal organizations. Information was gathered through questionnaires and participant observation. Two dimensions of integration are used, normative and consensual; three types of freedom are employed, ego, conditional, and disciplined. The basic hypothesis is that the dimensions of integr…
The Division of Labor, Alienation, and Anomie: A Reformulation
This paper attempts to identify the structural relationship that links the sociological process of the division of labor to the socio-psychological states associated with alienation and anomie. The solution proposed here is that the actor and the society represent a duality of behavior and that each compose a behavioral system with a division of labor. The relationship between the two divisions of labor is delineated and the concepts of alienatio…
Toward a Sociology of Freedom
Few sociologists have investigated, systematically and empirically, the concept of freedom, as such. In this paper, freedom is explored as it is viewed and experienced by people rather than as a philosophical construct. Three dimensions of freedom are identified: ego, discipline, and conditional. These types of freedom are examined in six types of groups and in relation to feelings of loss of freedom. Finally, we approach a theory of freedom, its…

Change in Sexual Behavior and Attitudes of College Students
A survey of 244 college students in a Southern university was conducted to ascertain the extent of change in sexual behavior and attitudes from data reported by Kinsey in 1948. No major changes in reported incidence of premarital coitus or petting were found. Attitudes toward certain aspects of sexual behavior were changed in the direction of placing responsibility on the individual rather than on the community and a large number considering prom…
