Alternativas de suministro de agua en Medellín, Colombia: Intersección de prácticas institucionales, en las márgenes y autónomas
This research engages with theories of urban political ecology and social practice with the objective of revealing socio-public water alternatives in the city of Medellín by analyzing the intersections between institutional, at the margins and autonomous water practices through time. Close attention is placed on the urban peripheries, and the role played by water justice movements. Results point to the emancipatory potential of water practices i…
River co-learning arenas: Principles and Practices for Transdisciplinary Knowledge Co-Creation and Multi-Scalar (Inter)action
This paper develops the methodological concept of river co-learning arenas (RCAs) and explores their potential to strengthen innovative grassroots river initiatives, enliven river commons, regenerate river ecologies, and foster greater socio-ecological justice. The integrity of river systems has been threatened in profound ways over the last century. Pollution, damming, canalisation, and water grabbing are some examples of pressures threatening t…
Riverhood: Political Ecologies of Socionature Commoning and Translocal Struggles for Water Justice
Mega-damming, pollution and depletion endanger rivers worldwide. Meanwhile, modernist imaginaries of ordering 'unruly waters and humans' have become cornerstones of hydraulic-bureaucratic and capitalist development. They separate hydro/social worlds, sideline river-commons cultures, and deepen socio-environmental injustices. But myriad new water justice movements (NWJMs) proliferate: rooted, disruptive, transdisciplinary, multi-scalar coalitions …
The Many Natures of Water in Latin-American Neo-Extractivist Conflicts
Thousands of diverse ‘water protectors’ representing different ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds throughout the American continent are standing firm against the destruction of ecological systems carried out by extractive development projects. One recent example concerning indigenous peoples has been the mobilization carried out by the Hunkpapa Lakota and Yanktonai Dakota Native American people of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation against…
Decolonizing hegemonic approaches of water: Exploring Latin American proposals for communality and community entanglements
The current civilizational crisis raises challenges on the care of the commons, among them water occupies a crucial place. In this context it is essential to rethink water, from other epistemic and ontological approaches, that resist the determinism of neoliberal capitalism, the monoculture of modern eurocentric science and the anthropocentric-patriarchal domination of nature. Departing from Latin American political ecology, in first place, we ca…
Tempered radicalism and intersectionality: Scholar‐activism in the neoliberal university
Using a collaborative critical personal narrative methodology grounded in intersectionality, we interrogated tensions in identifying ourselves as tempered radicals and scholar‐activists who were involved in a local university‐community activist organization. We assert the value of informal activist spaces within the university and identify issues related to the lack of recognition of scholar‐activism as legitimate scholarship, including the parad…
Water Matters: Thinking with water Class Experience
This article revisits a co-learning experience of a graduate course on the political ecology of water at the Master's program in Development Studies in a Colombian private university which employed a thinking with water teaching methodology based on the ontological-epistemological-methodological unity. Water as a nearly universal solvent not only conditions life on the planet but also defines human imaginary. The physical characteristics of water…
Sí a la vida, al agua y al territorio’: Relaciones hidrosociales alternativas en Colombia
‘Yes to life, to water, and to land’. Alternative hidrosocial relations in ColombiaThe boom in development policies based on mining extractivism in Latin America is dramatically transforming human- nature relationships. In countries such as Colombia, these strucural reforms opened agricultural territories to large-scale mining and energy investments. The area known as the “Middle Cauca Belt” bordering the Cauca River in the southwestern part of t…
Local to Global Justice: Roles of Student Activism in Higher Education, Leadership Development, and Community Engagement
This study examined how organizing an annual social justice forum and festival through involvement in a multi-issue, progressive, activist student organization called Local to Global Justice (LTGJ; www.localtoglobal.org) impacted students’ academic experiences and professional development (e.g., scholar-activism, critical thinking, applied learning), leadership development, and community engagement and activism. Current and alumni student leaders…
Justice for Roofers: Toward a Comprehensive Union Organizing Campaign Involving Latino Construction Workers in Arizona
The author describes and analyzes a comprehensive union organizing campaign in the building and construction trade unions. Justice for Roofers is exceptional not only in that it involves Latino immigrants in Arizona, a state known for its harsh anti-immigrant and antilabor laws but also because it uses a comprehensive union organizing model tailored to the industry. Examining the different actors, strategies, and actions used in this organizing c…
