More than half of the states in the United States have implemented laws or policies requiring transgender athletes to participate in athletics aligned with their sex assigned at birth. President Trump signed Executive Order 14201, Keeping Men Out of Women's Sports, on February 5, 2025, expanding these restrictions to recipients of federal education funding. The order also made it official policy to oppose transgender women athletes participating …

Despite strong indications of elevated risk of suicidal behavior in lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, limited attention has been given to research, interventions or suicide prevention programs targeting these populations. This article is a culmination of a three-year effort by an expert panel to address the need for better understanding of suicidal behavior and suicide risk in sexual minority populations, and stimulate the developme…

  • Public Health Consequences of the Defense of Marriage Act for Lesbian and Bisexual Women

    Open Access•Robin M Mathy, Barbara A Lehmann•ARTICLE•Feminism & Psychology•2004•Cited by: 2•References: 1

In this article, we examine the associations between women’s relationship status and sexual orientation in relation to suicidality (ideations and attempts), selfperceived excessive use or difficulties controlling the use of alcohol, drugs, and sex, and self-reported psychotherapy and psychiatric medications (past and present). On the basis of our analysis of these factors, we argue that the US Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and the ban on same-se…

  • On Cultural Competence and Scientific Rigor in Transgender Treatment

    Robin M Mathy•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2004•Cited by: 1•References: 6

Fee et al. argue that “[L]egal requirements for [sex reassignment surgery] as a condition of changing one’s gender need to be carefully reexamined.”1 Readers have a right to assume that authors have some authoritative knowledge about the subject about which they are writing.2 However, Fee et al. (2 historians and a contractor) appear to lack the clinical credentials to make policy recommendations about transgender care. Further, their factual dat…

  • Bisexual and Transgender Identities in a Nonclinical Sample of North Americans

    Robin M Mathy, Barbara A Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Bisexuality•2003•Cited by: 3•References: 5

We hypothesized that a higher proportion of bisexual females (n = 792) and transgender individuals (n = 73) than bisexual males (n = 1,457) would self-report suicidal intent, behavioral difficulties, and mental health treatment. Relative to bisexual males, bisexual females and transgender individuals had significantly higher prevalence rates of suicidal intent, mental health difficulties, and mental health services. Prevalence rates among transge…

  • On Reliability and Cultural Competence in Studies of Sexual Minority Suicidality

    Robin M Mathy•ARTICLE•American Journal of Public Health•2002•References: 8

Paul et al. published in the August 2002 issue of the Journal a potentially misleading assertion, specifically, that literature concerning sexual orientation and suicide risks has been “primarily based on opportunistic samples.”1 The assertion is neither new nor correct. Similar criticisms were made in 1995 by attendees at a workshop convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institute of Mental Health, and the Ameri…

Assessed sympathy and personal distress with facial and physiological indexes (heart rate) as well as self-report indexes and examined the relations of these various indexes to prosocial behavior for children and adults in an easy escape condition. Heart rate deceleration during exposure to the needy others was associated with increased willingness to help. In addition, adults' reports of sympathy, as well as facial sadness and concerned attentio…
