Kultursoziologische Stadtforschung: Grundlagen, Analysen, Perspektiven
Epilogue: Spatializing Cities, Exploring Urban Religion, Re-Imagining Urbanity
As an epilogue to the essays in this special issue, the article revolves around the question of the specificity of urban religious experiences. In addressing this question, I will first elaborate on the conceptual notion of the city that fruitfully frames the essays, in order to show, by a second step, its strengths but also some blind spots. Finally, ways to illuminate the blind spots are suggested which at the same time may stimulate further re…
Politics of Crisis: Threatening and Defending Journalistic Expertise-A Processual Account
In this article, we argue for making the frequently invoked notion of 'crises of journalism' itself the proper subject of sociological analysis. Based on a case study of a public controversy over an adversarial TV interview with a well-known politician on Austria's public service broadcaster ORF, we provide an analysis of the practical use of crisis claims in metajournalistic discourse. Drawing on ethnomethodology, interactionism, and situational…

Against the background of a knowledgesociological perspective, this contribution evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the social theory underlying Hubert Knoblauch’s version of communicative constructivism. The discussion is focused, firstly, on the relational conceptualization of the social and, secondly, on the role of the subject within that relation. In order to solve the diagnosed problem of determining a ‘thin’ subject, I propose a rev…

What Makes People Tick? And What Makes a Society Tick? And is a Theory Useful for Understanding: An Interview with Peter L. Berger
Taking Berger and Luckmann to the Realm of Materiality: Architecture as a Social Construction
Although objects and buildings form an integral part of the reality of everyday life, they have seldom been explicitly discussed in social theory. This article starts by exploring how various classical approaches relate the social to the material world in order to show, in a second step, how this can be done with the help of the 'new sociology of knowledge' formulated by Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann in 1966. Central in this effort is the c…
Multiple Realities and Religion: A Sociological Approach
Stadium Worlds: Football, Space and the Built Environment
Analyzing football as a cultural practice, this book investigates the connection between the sport and its built environment. Four thematic sections bring together an international multi-disciplinary range of perspectives with particular focus on the stadium. Examples from architectural design, media studies and archaeology are used while studying advertising, economics, migration, fandom, local identities, emotions, gender, and the sociology of …

Negotiating Urban Conflicts: Interaction, Space and Control
Cities have always been arenas of social and symbolic conflict. As places of encounter between different classes, ethnic groups, and lifestyles, cities play the role of powerful integrators; yet on the other hand urban contexts are the ideal setting for marginalization and violence. The struggle over control of urban spaces is an ambivalent mode of sociation: while producing themselves, groups produce exclusive spaces and then, in turn, use the b…
