  • Homonationalism, LGBT desaparecidos , and the politics of queer memory in Argentina

    Open Access•Santiago Joaquín Insausti, Pablo Ben•ARTICLE•Memory Studies•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 7

Although homonationalism is a fundamental category in queer studies, it has never been used to understand the history of the Argentine lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender movement and the emergence of a hegemonic queer memory based on the self-representation of Argentina as a “European-like” and “white” nation that often claims to be different from “the rest” of Latin America. This article examines the history of the Argentine construction of whi…

  • Race And Politics In Peruvian And Argentine Porn Under The Transition To Democracy, 1975-1985

Santiago Joaquín Insausti, Pablo Ben•ARTICLE•Journal of Latin American…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 2

This paper examines the articulation of race, class, gender, and politics in erotic magazines during the Argentine and Peruvian destapes in the transition from dictatorial to democratic rule at the turn to the 1980s. We argue that porn, as a genre, was not limited to a niche of readers seeking to use the magazines only for erotic purposes. In Peru, porn was one of the main agents in the opposition to military rule, and it only became a separate, …

  • Historical trends leading to the same-sex marriage law in Argentina1

Open Access•Pablo Ben, Santiago Joaquín Insausti•ARTICLE•Cahiers des Amériques latines•2021•References: 20

This article analyzes the social transformations converging in “the revolution of LGBT rights” in Argentina. Unlike other short-term perspectives focusing on the strategies of LGBT organizations and on sudden and recent shifts in politics, our study concentrates on the historical transformations of varying length that established the conditions under which the struggle for same-sex marriage could succeed. Among other trends, we will analyze the c…

  • Foucault, capitalismo y sexualidad

    Open Access•Pablo Ben•ARTICLE•Mora•2020

  • Dictatorial Rule and Sexual Politics in Argentina

Pablo Ben, Santiago Joaquín Insausti•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2017•Cited by: 9•References: 13

The Frente de Liberación Homosexual (FLH, 1967-1976) was the first political movement of homosexual men in Argentina. Despite its short life span, this organization set the ground for future developments. The FLH emerged in the context of increasing authoritarianism rather than being the result of a transition to democracy. The relationship with homophobic Peronists and left-wing traditions was, paradoxically, crucial for the emergence of the FLH…

  • Chimneys in the Desert

    Pablo Ben•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2008

The high rate of Argentine industrial growth between 1930 and 1970 took place under an umbrella of protectionism and government intervention in the economy that developed as a worldwide trend. During this era, Argentine scholars from across the political spectrum concluded that industrial growth could not take place on the global economic periphery without these interventionist policies. From populism to desarrollismo, the consensus claimed that …

  • Freud in the Pampas. The Emergence and development of a Psychoanalytic Culture in Argentina. Mariano BEN PLOTKIN

    Open Access•Pablo Ben•ARTICLE•EIAL - Estudios Interdisciplinarios…•2003

This study stands in opposition to some of the generally accepted views of the history of this discipline, including those seeking to pinpoint the "real" current in psychoanalysis. By contrast, Mariano Ben Plotkin adopts a "historical approach" that focuses on the many ways in which different cultures affected the reception of psychoanalysis in Argentina. Accordingly, the author rejects a reconstruction of the past that assumes that psychoanalysi…
