  • On place and privilege

    Open Access•Krista E Paulsen, Jenny M Stuber•ARTICLE•Sociology Compass•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 55

Affluent people have long used places, including residential areas and their associated commercial districts and public spaces, as markers of class status. In doing so, they have often sought places that are homogeneous in terms class, and often race/ethnicity, and sought to preserve elite enclaves through a variety of policies and practices. But as we detail here, affluent people are now drawn to different types of residential settings, and thei…

  • Understanding social class in place

    Open Access•Jenny M Stuber, Jenny Stuber et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning A…•2022•References: 32

Existing research portrays elite places as prone to exclusion, welcoming of upscaling, and focused on protecting their economic self-interests. This paper provides nuance to this research by exploring how stakeholders understand and respond to supergentrification. During the fall of 2016, a group of citizen activists in the exclusive community of Aspen, Colorado, initiated an ordinance seeking to limit the expansion of luxury chain stores. Drawin…

  • Aspen and the American dream

    Open Access•Jenny M Stuber, Jenny Stuber•ARTICLE•Contexts•2020

Tensions and contradictions run through the upscale resort town of Aspen, Colorado. The fundamental disconnect between local incomes and the price of real estate could be called “the impossible math of Aspen, Colorado.” The answer to this equation is in the careful orchestration of diverse class interests through local politics, all to maintain Aspen’s value and authentic small-town character

  • Inside the College Gates

    Jenny M Stuber•BOOK•Inside the College Gates•2011

To date, scholars in higher education have examined the ways in which students' experiences in the classroom and the human capital they attain impact social class inequalities. In this book, Jenny Stuber argues that the experiential core of college life-the social and extra-curricular worlds of higher education-operates as a setting in which social class inequalities manifest and get reproduced. As college students form friendships and get involv…

  • Social status, values, and support for reform in education

Open Access•Joshua Klugman, Pamela Barnhouse Walters et al.•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2011•References: 15

Using a survey of Ohio and Indiana residents, we analyze the extent to which public support for school vouchers and school finance reform is structured by the same socioeconomic interests and values (equality, humanitarianism, individualism, and limited government) as is public support for contentious welfare policies. Disadvantaged individuals and individuals who live in disadvantaged communities are more likely to support vouchers but social st…

  • Gender, Social Class, and Exclusion

    Open Access•Jenny M Stuber, Joshua Klugman et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Perspectives•2011•Cited by: 9•References: 25

This article explores gender and class exclusion among college students. The authors use qualitative data to explore how students talk about gender and class exclusion and quantitative data to model patterns of exclusion within the Greek system. The Greek system serves as a site for social reproduction. Students constructed young women as elitist and prone to class exclusion, while typifying young men as unconcerned with such matters. Quantitativ…

  • Class, Culture, and Participation in the Collegiate Extra‐Curriculum

    Open Access•Jenny M Stuber•ARTICLE•Sociological Forum•2009•Cited by: 40•References: 21

With larger percentages of high school students entering higher education, it becomes increasingly important to look at how processes occurring on college campuses contribute to social stratification. Using in‐depth interviews with 61 students, I ask: How does social class structure students’ participation in the collegiate extra‐curriculum? I argue that the collegiate extra‐curriculum is an important site for stratification because it is there t…

  • Talk of Class

    Open Access•Jenny M Stuber•ARTICLE•Journal of Contemporary Ethnography•2006•Cited by: 25•References: 31

Discourses of social class are an important object of study because how people talk about social class can translate into how they act on the basis of social class. Using data from sixty in-depth interviews with white college students from working- and upper-middle-class backgrounds at two institutions of higher education, I explore college students' social class awareness, whether they think that social class matters, and how they construct symb…
