  • Livestock as a Pathway to Women’s Empowerment in Low and Middle-Income Countries: A Scoping Review

I Baltenweck, Esther Leah Achandi et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2024

Progress towards women’s empowerment (WE) and gender equality is slow and uneven across the Global South. Livestock systems support the livelihoods of one billion poor people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), most of whom are women. While livestock and gender research has focused on addressing gender inequalities to build a better livestock sector, there is growing evidence that livestock development can contribute to WE and gender equ…

  • Adapting to climate change among transitioning Maasai pastoralists in southern Kenya: An Intersectional Analysis of Differentiated Abilities to Benefit From Diversification Processes

Open Access•Edwige Marty, Renee Bullock et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Peasant Studies•2023•Cited by: 11•References: 61

With increasingly fragmented rangelands, restricted mobility and climatic stress, diversification has accelerated among East African pastoralists. Diversification is also promoted as a climate change adaptation strategy to reduce climatic exposure. Through a study of a Maasai communal land in southern Kenya, we analyze how pastoralists navigate changing access to key productive resources that are linked to diversification processes, social differ…

  • Intersectionality in gender and agriculture: Toward an applied research design

Open Access•Katie Tavenner, Todd Crane et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Technology and Development•2022•Cited by: 4•References: 17

Applied to agricultural research for development (AR4D), intersectionality can illuminate how gender’s interactions with other axes of social differentiation, such as age, assets base, marital status, race/ethnic community, and caste/class, shape the social dynamics of agricultural systems and technological change to affect gender and development outcomes. However, operationalizing an intersectional approach at both the intervention and research …

  • Young Women's and Men's Opportunity Spaces in Dairy Intensification in Kenya

    Open Access•Renee Bullock, Todd Crane•ARTICLE•Rural Sociology•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 6

Kenya has a high youth population coupled with high rates of unemployment. Development policies, including the National Youth Policy, emphasize the potential of agriculture as a source of youth employment. Kenya's dairy subsector is relatively well developed and continuing to commercialize. We analyse young women and men's current and emerging roles in dairy intensification and develop a conceptual framework that draws on opportunity space, inter…

  • Gendered mobilities and immobilities: Women’s and men’s capacities for agricultural innovation in Kenya and Nigeria

    Open Access•Johanna Bergman Lodin, Amare Tegbaru et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 9

Social norms surrounding women’s and men’s mobility in public spaces often differ. Here we discuss how gendered mobilities and immobilities influence women’s and men’s capacities to innovate in agriculture. We analyze four case studies from Western Kenya and Southwestern Nigeria that draw on 28 focus group discussions and 32 individual interviews with a total of 225 rural and peri-urban women, men and youth. Findings show that women in both sites…
