A forest-steppe landscape and the settlement Ksizovo-1 in the Don region during the Middle Bronze Age
Systematic investigations of Bronze Age settlements in different regions of western Eurasia have provided new insights into settlement structures, land use, and past mobile lifestyles. In this paper, we examine the single-layered site of Ksizovo-1 in the Upper Don basin, located in a microregion of the Eastern European forest-steppe. We integrate archaeological, bioarchaeological, and molecular investigations to evaluate if the Middle Bronze Age …
Plant ways in Middle Bronze Age Anatolia—an archaeological interpretation of phytoliths and other plant remains from Zincirli Höyük, Türkiye
This paper presents the results of phytolith analysis from Middle Bronze Age II (1800–1600 bce ) Zincirli Höyük, Türkiye. The study area was destroyed by a single fire event resulting in the preservation and recovery of several food processing installations (archaeological features) and restorable vessels (broken pots) in situ. The archaeological contexts were only slightly disturbed by later sedimentary and human activities. In this paper, we fo…
Climate change and the taphonomic signature of Neolithic mounds
This paper discusses the impact of modern land use and climate change on mounded prehistoric sites, considering the evidence from Kur River Basin (southwestern Iran). By applying remote sensing and GIS techniques to historical and recent satellite imagery, we monitored an assemblage of 45 Neolithic mounds in order to map and quantify their taphonomic signatures over the last 53 years. Our results highlight that the deterioration of sites occurred…
An estate at Zincirli? Land use and resource exploitation at the Middle Bronze Age monumental building Complex DD in Zincirli, Gaziantep Province of Turkey
Near Eastern monumental buildings once hosted institutions with a variety of economic and environmental footprints. In this article examining a Middle Bronze Age II (seventeenth century BC) building complex at Zincirli, Turkey, we integrate bioarchaeological remains with ceramic and artifactual evidence to evaluate whether this building was a specialized node in a broader network and centralized economy. Combining seed/fruit/chaff analysis with c…
Grinding and Abrading Activities in the Earlier Neolithic of Northern Greece
Despite their widespread presence and potential to shed light on various aspects of prehistoric life, for a long time Neolithic macrolithics attracted little scholarly attention. The situation, however, is rapidly changing as more and more assemblages are being studied and published systematically. The study of the grinding and abrading tools from the earlier Neolithic site of Pontokomi-Souloukia in northern Greece is part of this recent trend, a…
Plant use from the grinding stones’ viewpoint
[Resesarch Article]Recent archaeological examinations include an increasing amount of natural science analyses. They are often carried out by external specialists and their results are often accepted by archaeologists without question. This may lead to incomplete integration of the results into an archaeological context. One of those methods, increasingly employed in the field of archaeology, is phytolith analysis. Phytoliths, microscopic silica …

New investigations in the region of the East Plain Cilicia offer remarkable insights into the Iron Age history of this region. The Osmaniye Archaeological Survey, being conducted since 2005, comprises more than 40 archaeological mounds that have yielded a large variety of material culture, from the Neolithic period to medieval times. In this article, the Iron Age pottery of the survey will be analyzed and compared with other sources from Osmaniye…
