  • Educational Disparities in Preventable Deaths

    Open Access•Octavio Bramajo, Víctor M García-Guerrero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2024•References: 2

Objective Determine how preventable causes of death contribute to the life expectancy gap between Mexico and Spain. Methods We used a linear integral decomposition to analyze the impact of preventable mortality on life expectancy between ages 30-75 (temporary life expectancy) between Mexico and Spain in 2018. Additionally, we computed cause-deleted life tables to estimate potential gains in temporary life expectancy. Analyses were stratified by e…

  • Inequality Crossroads of Mortality

    Open Access•Ana C Gómez-Ugarte, Víctor M García-Guerrero•ARTICLE•Population Research and Policy…•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 48

The Mexican health system has been characterized by a mixture of progress and pitfalls, resulting in persistent inequalities. The main causes of death are related to socioeconomic factors reflecting the lack of opportunities regarding access to education, employment, income, and public health services. In this paper, we study the association between social inequality and mortality to assess how population composition by socioeconomic level shapes…

  • Considerations for a New Research Agenda on Migration and Refugee Studies

    Open Access•Cristina Masferrer, Luicy Pedroza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant & Refugee…•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 66

Since 2000, Mexico has faced challenges in developing migration policies as it transformed from an emigration country into a country of return, transit, immigration, and forced internal displacement. With limited institutional capacities to address this complexity, Mexican policymakers transferred key policymaking powers to the foreign policy apparatus to bend to the Trump administration’s coercive demands that Mexico contain and deter migration.…

  • Caminos divergentes a la baja mortalidad? El incremento en la esperanza de vida y la desigualdad de años vividos en América Latina y Europa

    Open Access•Patricio Solís, Víctor M García-Guerrero•ARTICLE•Estudios Demográficos y Urbanos•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 15

  • Mexico's epidemic of violence and its public health significance on average length of life

    Open Access•Vladimir Canudas-Romo, José Manuel Aburto et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2017•Cited by: 13•References: 21

OBJECTIVES: A disproportionate number of homicides have caused Mexican life expectancy to stagnate during the new millennium. No efforts currently exist to quantify the harm of violent acts on the lives of the general population. We quantified the impact of perceived vulnerability on life expectancy. METHODS: Three Mexican national surveys on perceptions of public safety, life tables, and crime and vital statistics (2000-2014) were used. Prevalen…

  • The stagnation of the Mexican male life expectancy in the first decade of the 21st century

    Vladimir Canudas-Romo, Víctor M García-Guerrero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2015•Cited by: 11•References: 25

OBJECTIVES: In the first decade of the 21st century, the Mexican life expectancy changed from a long trend of increase to stagnation. These changes concur with an increase in deaths by homicides that the country experienced in that decade, and an obesity epidemic that had developed over the last decades of the 20th century. We quantify the impact of causes of death on life expectancy from 2000 to 2010. METHODS: Two approaches to analyse causes of…
