  • Sound change and tonogenesis in Sylheti

    Priti Raychoudhury, Shakuntala Mahanta•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2022

Our study investigates the nature of tonogenesis in Sylheti, which was triggered by the merger of aspirated and unaspirated consonants in the language. We propose that the tonogenetic factors contributed by the four-way laryngeal contrast condition a three-way tonal contrast in Sylheti depending on the voicing and syllabic position of the sound. We take into consideration both monosyllabic and disyllabic sets of words and claim that Sylheti has t…

  • Pitch Range and Voice Quality in Dimasa Focus Intonation

Open Access•Shakuntala Mahanta, Amalesh Gope et al.•ARTICLE•Languages•2021•References: 28

This paper presents an analysis of Dimasa focus intonation. The acoustic analysis shows that narrow focus sentences undergo a jump in the pitch range irrespective of the underlying tonal value of the morpheme it attaches to. In addition to f0 expansion, the prosodic property of focus in Dimasa was found to have different (tense) phonation in morphologically marked narrow focus sentences when compared to the broad focus context. Thus, the tense ph…

  • The Phonology of Contrastive Focus in Standard Colloquial Assamese

Open Access•Asim-ul Islam Twaha, Shakuntala Mahanta•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2016

The present study investigates how Standard Colloquial Assamese (henceforth SCA) underlines contrastive focus (henceforth CF) phonologically, and what are the phonetic cues it employs in doing so. Assamese belongs to the Eastern Indo-Aryan language area of the Indo European language family (Goswami, 1982; Goswami & Tamuli, 2003) with SOV as the canonical word order. SCA variety is mostly spoken in the eastern districts of Assam: Tinsukia, Dibruga…

  • On the Phonetics and Phonology of Focus marking in Boro

    Open Access•Shakuntala Mahanta, K Das et al.•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual…•2016•References: 2

It is discussed widely in the literature on tone and intonation that both these phenomenon make use of changes in the f0. It is often assumed that intonation in tone languages is only slightly more limited than it is in non-tonal ones (Yip 2002). This paper addresses the question of tone assignment in Boro and investigates how it operates as a function of focus. This paper studies both the phonetics and phonology of intonation in Boro and delinea…
