The effect of corruption on firm investment in the presence of missing data
Greater availability of firm-level surveys in developing countries has enabled researchers to consider the effects of corruption at the firm level. One often overlooked issue with these surveys is nonresponse by firms. We examine the impact of corruption on firm investment and demonstrate that failing to account for nonresponse leads to an overestimation of the impact of corruption
A systematic review of studies validating the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale in antepartum and postpartum women
Objective: The Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) is the most widely used screening tool for postpartum depression (PPD). We systematically reviewed the published evidence on its validity in detecting PPD and antepartum depression (APD) up to July 2008. Method: Systematic review of validation studies of the EPDS included 1987–2008. Cut‐off points of 9/10 for possible PPD, 12/13 for probable PPD and 14/15 for APD were used. Results: Thirt…
Comparing the effects of entertainment media and tobacco marketing on youth smoking
The results suggest separate roles for entertainment media and tobacco marketing on adolescent smoking. Both exposures deserve equal emphasis from a policy standpoint
An approach to the optimal allocation of conservation funds to minimize loss of genetic diversity between livestock breeds
About 30% of all farm animal breeds worldwide are at risk of extinction. To prevent this irreversible erosion of genetic diversity, the limited funds available for conservation need to be allocated in the most efficient way. A viable theory of literary humanism must do justice to the idea that literature offers cognitive rewards to the careful reader. There are, however, powerful arguments to the effect that literature is at best only capable of offering idle visions of a world already well known. Two cists representing common forms of Bronze Age burial monument were excavated in 1992 in Orkney.A short flat cist at Midskaill, on the island of Egilsay, was previously unrecorded and it contained coarse pottery sherds and 'cramp' (vitrified cremation slag).No human bone was found.The second cist, located within a mound at Linga Fiold, Sandwick, on Mainland Orkney, contained human bone and cramp.The Linga Fiold mound is one of a recorded and p…
