Arabia from the Hellenistic to the Late Roman/Byzantine Period
The region under consideration in this chapter includes the territories of southern Syria, Transjordan, southern Palestine, and the northwestern Arabian Peninsula. During the Hellenistic–early Roman period (fourth century bc–first century ad), these constituted the Nabataean kingdom, later (ad 106–early fourth century) were within the boundaries of the Roman province of Arabia, and finally (fourth–early seventh centuries) comprised the Byzantine …

A recently discovered inscribed statue ‘plinth’ of a female votary from Idalion‐Moutti tou Arvili
During the 2022 field season of the Berlin-Idalion-Project, a fragmented part of a live-size limestone statue was found on the eastern acropolis (Moutti tou Arvili) of ancient Idalion. In addition to the few elements giving information about the iconography of the statue, the most important aspect of this find is certainly the inscription in Greek alphabetic script that initially covered a good part of the front of the ‘plinth’. In the present co…
Membra disiecta of historic information concerning the necropoleis of Kition
This paper deals with historical information from the 19th century relating to various aspects of the necropoleis of ancient Kition. Although the diary entries of Lorenzo Warriner Pease from 1834 to 1839 are not specifically concerned with the study of ancient remains, they provide interesting information on the distribution of rock‐cut chamber tombs, particularly in the area of Sotiros and further west. During his visit to Cyprus in 1845, Ludwig…
From Paul Schröder’s archives on Cyprus, V. The first (?) photographs of Cesnola’s Golgoi finds
During his trips to Cyprus in 1870 and 1873, the German orientalist and diplomat, Paul Schröder, visited L. Palma di Cesnola’s excavations at Golgoi twice. The first visit, together with Cesnola, took place in spring 1870, very soon after or even during the actual fieldwork. According to his travel notes and diaries, Schröder obtained photographs of the finds during this visit, which he sent to Berlin. This contribution tries to identify these ph…
From Paul Schröder’s archives on Cyprus, IV. The inscriptions from the Lang and Cesnola collections
During his trips to Cyprus in 1870 and 1873, the German orientalist and diplomat Paul Schröder, was able to study the Lang and Cesnola epigraphic collections. His correspondence with Justus Olshausen (an orientalist himself, but also a councillor of the Prussian Ministry of Education) contains precious information on some newly discovered important Phoenician and syllabic inscriptions. These derive mostly from Lang’s excavations and acquisitions …
Giorgos Papantoniou, Christine Morris, Athanasios Vionis (Hrsg.), Unlocking sacred landscapes
From Paul Schroeder’s archives on Cyprus, I-III

A head definitely not from Rantidi and a tribute to Olivier Masson

The Greek and Roman Bronzes : A Recent Study. Abstract. – The first part deals with exhibition catalogues which draw attention to two important pieces : a head from the area of Stara Zagora (Bulgaria) which may be a portrait of Seuthes III of Thrace, and an Apoxyomenos (?) from the waters of the Dalmatian islands, perhaps a second cast of the Ephesus statue in Vienna. The second part reviews three books : on the militaria from Sisak (Croatia) in …

The International Wadi Farasa Project (IWFP) Progress on the Work in the Wadi Farasa East, Petra
Since the first examination of Wadi Farasa East on the south-eastern outskirts of the city centre of Petra in 1999, three successive seasons of excavation have been carried out at the site (IWFP 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002; Schmid 200IA). The International Wadi Farasa Project would not have been possible without the generous support of the Palestine Exploration Fund (PEF, London) and the Association for the Understanding of Ancient Cultures (AUAC, Bas…

Worshipping the emperor(s)
In Greece, as in the E Mediterranean as a whole, the ruler-cult was well established during the Hellenistic period, but whereas in the Attalid, Seleucid and Ptolemaic kingdoms the same dynasty had ruled for centuries and the cult of the living ruler and the dynastic cult were stable institutions, the ruler-cult in Greece, though at first part of the Macedonian kingdom, was affected by the series of rulers of different dynasties who followed one a…
