Social status, chaste widowhood, and trends in marital age gaps in post-Imjin Korea, 1606–1630
This study investigates the impact of warfare on nuptial patterns, focusing on the trends and characteristics of age differences within marriage. Specifically, it explores the socio-demographic outcomes of the Imjin War (1592–1598) and post-war reconstruction in Korea, using the earliest extant Chosŏn household registers, compiled between 1606 and 1630. Individual-level microdata were derived involving 2,336 married couples based on 11,749 entrie…
Ethnic Distinctions, Legal Connotations: Chinese Patterns of Boundary Making and Crossing
This study analyzes, from a comparative and historical perspective, the clash between state statutory law and native customary law and the consequential effects of that rivalry on ethno-legal categories. It adopts a long-term perspective on Chinese society, with a particular focus on its history over the last three centuries. Although the imperial Chinese state had a centralized legal code, many non-Han subjects followed different legal standards…
Walk the Line: How Successful Are Efforts to Maintain Monogamy in Intimate Relationships
Monogamy, typically defined as sexual and romantic exclusivity to one partner, is a near-universal expectation in committed intimate relationships in Western societies. Attractive alternative partners are a common threat to monogamous relationships. However, little is known about how individuals strive to protect their relationships from tempting alternatives, particularly those embedded in one's social network. The current exploratory study was …
Ain't misbehavin? Monogamy maintenance strategies in heterosexual romantic relationships
Monogamy is a near universal expectation in intimate relationships in Western societies and is typically defined as sexual and romantic exclusivity to one partner. This research informs the paradox between monogamy intentions and high rates of infidelity. Monogamy maintenance (MM) strategies used in response to relationship threats posed by attraction to extradyadic others were identified and characterized. Across three samples, 741 U.S. adults i…
Hierarchical Integration of Agency and Communion: A Study of Influential Moral Figures
The purpose of this research is to (a) identify which of recent history's influential figures did and which did not personify moral excellence, and (b) to examine the motives that drove these individuals along such divergent paths. In Study 1, 102 social scientists evaluated the moral qualities of influential figures from T ime Magazine's lists. In Study 2, we selected the 15 top ranking of these figures to comprise a moral exemplar group and the…
Hierarchical Integration of Agency and Communion: A Study of Influential Moral Figures
The integration of agency and communion in moral personality: Evidence of enlightened self-interest
Agency and communion are fundamental human motives, often conceptualized as being in tension. This study examines the notion that moral exemplars overcome this tension and adaptively integrate these 2 motives within their personality. Participants were 25 moral exemplars-recipients of a national award for extraordinary volunteerism-and 25 demographically matched comparison participants. Each participant responded to a life review interview and pr…
