  • Two Row Repair

    Open Access•Debra Vidali•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2024•Cited by: 1

The Two Row Repair trilogy refuses erasure as it tracks a journey of attempted recovery and repair, using the Two Row Wampum (Kaswenta) as inspiration, model, and directive. The Two Row Wampum, a foundational agreement made between Haudenosaunee and Dutch in 1613, extends into the present as a promise between Haudenosaunee and people of European descent to co-exist in peace, respect, and friendship, and in common stewardship for all orders of lif…

  • Flame thrower

    Open Access•Debra Vidali•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Humanism•2023

This poem is part of a special section in honor of Kathleen Stewart. Imagined as a staccato spoken word piece, the short lines with visual semantic and sonic parallelisms flow like an urgent, nonstop process of throwing flames, barbs, disruptions, and unexpected care into anthropological spaces. As such, the poetic layout pays tribute with an itemized list of Katie's interventions: surgical strikes, sharp, powerful presences, and gentle lyric cla…

  • Ethnographic Installation and “The Archive”

    Open Access•Debra Vidali, Kwame Phillips•ARTICLE•Visual Anthropology Review•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 6

This essay examines the haunted relationality of ethnographic archives and anthropology, and the potential for multimodal installations to highlight these tensions while bringing anthropology toward new audiences and new types of collaborations. We argue that experimental ethnographic installations can be used to foreground complex relations among fieldwork, archives, re/dislocation, and aspiration, through nonlinear forms of argumentation and en…

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2018. 288 pp. The vibrancy and vitality of radio is beautifully conveyed in this careful ethnography about a single broadcaster whose news, advice, and cultural programs dominate the airwaves of Breeze FM, a communitybased co…

  • Ethnographic Theater Making

    Open Access•Debra Vidali•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 21

Ethnographic theater making is not just a modality for staged representation or reenactment. It is a modality of radical anthropological knowledge coproduction, one that disrupts authorship, self, linearity, and proposition-based knowledge through multimodal, multisensorial, collaborative, and embodied processes. In both incubation and performance, multimodal and multisensorial elements such as voice, body, memory, sound, movement, text, rhythm, …

  • Repairing a Screaming Silence

Debra Spitulnik Vidali, Debra Vidali•ARTICLE•Anthropology Now•2015

I am beginning to pay attention to the screaming silences around Native American stories in the United States today. Part of this is because there is a silenced story in my own family. Aunt Dot shu

  • The ethnography of process

    Open Access•Debra Spitulnik Vidali, Debra Vidali•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 14

This article problematizes the ethnography of process with respect to civic engagement and political subjectivity. Process is approached in a two-pronged sense: as a target of ethnographic/phenomenological discovery and as a place-based issue particular to the US. Regarding the first sense, I examine the dialogic emergence of political subjectivity in specific communication contexts. Concurrently, I raise epistemological questions about the power…

  • Introduction

Open Access•Debra Spitulnik Vidali, Debra Vidali et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 18

It is with great pleasure that we introduce this special issue of Ethnography on ‘Civic Mediations’. The two of us have long felt that the time is ripe for a deeper conversation about what it means to do an ethnography of the public sphere. In this issue we seek to problematize what public sphere ethnography means as an epistemological problem, as a matter of ethnographic engagement, and as a mode of ethnographic writing and re-presentation. The …

  • Anthropology and Mass Media

Debra Spitulnik, Debra Vidali•REVIEW•Annual Review of Anthropology•1993•Cited by: 166•References: 46

Infrastructures are material forms that allow for the possibility of exchange over space. They are the physical networks through which goods, ideas, waste, power, people, and finance are trafficked. In this article I trace the range of anthropological ...Read More
