Special Buildings at Neolithic Girmeler, Near Tlos in South‐west Anatolia
Special buildings, or communal buildings, were ubiquitous in most Neolithic settlements in the Levant, Upper Mesopotamia, and Anatolia. Recently, remains of three special buildings with terrazzo floors dating to the early seventh millennium BC representing the Initial Neolithic period in west Anatolian chronology were unearthed in the basal layers of the mound located in front of the Girmeler cave in south‐west Anatolia. The terrazzo floors in th…
Early Holocene in Girmeler: Defining Pre-Pottery Neolithic in Coastal Southwestern Anatolia
The site of Girmeler so far is the only excavated Early Holocene site in the Aegean coastal region of Anatolia. Early Holocene Girmeler was inhabited by semisedentary hunter groups living in wattle-and-daub huts with lime-plastered floors, exploiting a broad spectrum of wild animals and plant resources found within the immediate environs of the site. This article argues that Girmeler’s Early Holocene occupation of the late ninth and early eighth …
Animal Exploitation at the Subsistence Base of the Chalcolithic Gülpinar Community
This work examines the patterns of animal exploitation to reveal information on the subsistence base of the Chalcolithic settlers of Glpnar in Northwestern Anatolia. The prehistoric site of Glpnar, located beneath the remains of the Greek and Roman sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus (Smintheion) in northwestern Anatolia, has lately contributed much to our understanding of the Chalcolithic period particularly in western Anatolian littoral. Zooarchaeolo…

Archaeological evidence for 9th and 8th millennia BC at Girmeler Cave near Tlos in SW Turkey
A mound settlement in front of the Girmeler Cave near the major Lycian city of Tlos in SW Turkey revealed evidence for occupation during the late 9th and 8th millennia BC. The ccupation is characterized by a structure with at least two layers of lime-plastered floor, hearths and bins and a wattle-and-daub superstructure, all pointing to a sedentary community engaged in intensive hunting and gathering. The trial trenches at Girmeler Cave also yiel…
Melian obsidian in NW Turkey: Evidence for early Neolithic trade
Archaeological investigations carried out at the Early Neolithic coastal site of Coskuntepe in northwestern Turkey yielded an assemblage of 110 obsidian artifacts displaying the macroscopic characteristics of the well-known obsidian deposits on the Cycladic island of Melos. Analysis of three samples from this homogeneous obsidian assemblage using both X-Ray Fluorescence and Laser Ablation High Resolution Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectromet…
Coşkuntepe: An Early Neolithic Quern Production Site in NW Turkey
Coskuntepe, an Early Neolithic site in the coastal Troad region of NW Turkey, has evidence for quern making dating to around 6000 calibrated radiocarbon years B.C. The surface debris at the site consists largely of tested blocks of stone, discarded and broken rough-outs, percussion flakes, and used and broken hammerstones. The implications of this early production system are discussed within the broader framework of the Aegean Neolithic. The resu…

Hearth structures in the religious pattern of Early Bronze Age northeast Anatolia
The archaeology of Early Bronze Age northeast Anatolia has often been characterised by the dominant presence of the so-called Karaz Ware, a black burnished ware often decorated in relief. In northeast Anatolia, this distinctive ceramic tradition is represented in the archaeological contexts of major excavated sites of the Erzurum plain: Karaz, Güzelova, Pulur, Büyüktepe, and Sos Höyük (Kosay, Turfan 1959; Kosay, Vary 1964; 1967; Sagona et al 1993…
