  • Value change debt as a window of opportunity for transformative change: A case study on the mixed Indigenous food system of St. Paul Island, Alaska

    Open Access•Silja Zimmermann, Brian J Dermody et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2025•References: 5

Arctic Indigenous food systems are essential to the survival of local communities, but face significant challenges due to environmental, economic, and social pressures. The objective of this study is to elicit values of the mixed Indigenous food system on St. Paul Island, Alaska, and understand their potential as deep leverage points for transformative change in the context of their historical co-evolution with the local food system. To achieve t…

  • My Kingdom for a Barking Dog: A Critical History of Sheepdog Trialling with Border Collies, and Why It Matters to Sheep

    Open Access•Bert Theunissen•ARTICLE•Humanimalia•2025•References: 2

According to Raymond and Lorna Coppinger, experts in canine behaviour, sheepdog trialling with Border Collies is mostly for fun. The British International Sheep Dog Society (ISDS), however, contends that trialling has the practical aim of improving the collie as a working dog. So who is right? I take a historical approach to answer this question, using the wealth of data contained in The Field, a magazine established in 1853, to investigate the s…

  • A leverage points perspective on Arctic Indigenous food systems research: A systematic review

    Open Access•Silja Zimmermann, Brian J Dermody et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainability Science•2023

Arctic food systems are increasingly challenged by rapid climate change, loss of food security and subsequent weakening of food sovereignty, and destabilization of Indigenous practices. Despite growing scientific knowledge on Arctic food systems, Indigenous communities continue to struggle with a plethora of sustainability challenges. To develop a systemic understanding of these challenges, we performed a systematic review of 526 articles publish…

  • Hoe de Nederlandse melkveerassen ontstonden en wat dat betekent voor hun behoud als levend erfgoed

Bert Theunissen, Inge Jansen•ARTICLE•Tijdschrift voor Geschiedenis•2020

The origin of the Dutch dairy breeds and its significance for their conservation as living heritage The three dairy breeds that dominated Dutch dairying in the twentieth century – Black and White, Red and White, and Groningen Whitehead – were first described by agriculturalist Iman van den Bosch on the basis of a quantitative analysis of their bodily dimensions. However, Van den Bosch did not analyse his data statistically, and a reanalysis with …

  • The Oostvaardersplassen Fiasco

    Bert Theunissen•ARTICLE•Isis•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 3

The now infamous rewilding experiment in the Dutch Oostvaardersplassen was terminated in 2018 as a consequence of repeated public outcries against the massive crashes of the reserve’s herbivore populations during severe winters, particularly the winter of 2017–2018. This essay discusses the background and aims of the experiment and analyzes the causes of its failure. It argues that one of the main causes was the general public’s conception of nat…

  • Breeding for Nobility or for Production? Cultures of Dairy Cattle Breeding in the Netherlands, 1945-1995

    Bert Theunissen•ARTICLE•Isis•2012•Cited by: 10•References: 8

In the 1970s and 1980s Dutch farmers replaced their dual-purpose Friesian cows with Holsteins, a highly specialized American dairy breed. The changeover was related to a major turnabout in breeding practices that involved the adoption of quantitative genetics. Dutch commercial breeders had long resisted the quantitative approach to breeding that scientists had been recommending since World War II. After about 1970, however, they gave up their res…

    Open Access•Bert Theunissen•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•1994•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Hugo de Vries (1848–1935) would without doubt turn in his grave if he could be told about the various perspectives from which historians have studied his ideas and works. His would not be an exceptional case, of course, for many before and after him have fallen victim to the irony of history. Still, I am inclined to grant de Vries that he would have some reason for his distress, for the irony has hit him particularly hard. In 1922, de Vries was i…
