  • Experience of Intimate Partner violence among married couples

Open Access•Grace Diki, Albert Makochekanwa et al.•ARTICLE•Cogent Social Sciences•2022

The Mashonaland Central province has had the most recorded cases of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) as recorded by 2021 statistics. The study, using triangulated qualitative and quantitative methods, tested the hypothesis that both women and men are abused. SPSS Version 21 was used to do a multinomial regression on how sex, age gap, and income affects IPV’s distribution. A survey was used to measure the levels of IPV in the province while qualita…

  • A Comparative Analysis of the Causes of Gender-Based Violence Against Women Between Low and High-Income Households in Manicaland Province of Zimbabwe

Open Access•Washington Muzavazi, Albert Makochekanwa et al.•ARTICLE•Cogent Social Sciences•2022

There is a general perception that poverty and/or low income are the root causes of GBV in Zimbabwe. Efforts have been made to economically empower women in a bid to fight poverty and ultimately GBV, but research findings from Zimbabwe noted that GBV against women continues to rise in all societies, regardless of income levels. There is a paucity of literature comparing the causes of GBV among women in low- and high-income households in Zimbabwe.…

  • The impact of sexual violence on female labour force participation

Open Access•Talent Nesongano, Teresa Nyika et al.•ARTICLE•Cogent Social Sciences•2022

Sexual violence is a serious public health and human rights issue with both short- and long-term psychological and physical consequences on women and their decision to work. However, scant scholarly literature examines the relationship between sexual violence and female labour force participation (FLFP). Using evidence from a survey with 301 economically active women in Zvimba and Hurungwe districts, the binomial logit results revealed that educa…

  • The impact and implications of Covid-19

Open Access•Innocent Chirisa, Brilliant Mavhima et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2021

The article is an attempt to provide a kaleidoscopic interpretation of how social science scholarship views the socio-cultural terrain of Zimbabwe during and after the global health crisis, and the societal and business haemorrhage induced by the coronavirus (COVID-19). Built through a multi-perspective and triangulation involving a modified Delphic approach that engages archival methods involving document and literature review, content analysis …

  • Men's attitudes

Open Access•Stanzia Moyo, Marvellous Mhloyi et al.•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2015

Male circumcision has witnessed a paradigm shift from being regarded as a religious and cultural practice to a global intervention strategy meant to curb transmission of HIV. This is particularly evident in sub-Saharan African countries where the HIV prevalence is greater than 15%. Zimbabwe adopted the voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) strategy in 2009; however, since then the uptake of the intervention has only 10% of the adult male pop…

  • Identity Formation

    M M Mhloyi, Marvellous Mhloyi•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1998

Zimbabwe has experienced a breakdown in traditional social systems as a consequence of "modernization." Identity formation has to solidify within a cultural tension between the family, whose norms, values, and role expectations are African in general with a Zimbabwean specificity and representing tradition, and the education system and media styled from the western culture. Adolescents depend, to some extent, on themselves as peers to one another…

  • Health and Human Rights

    Open Access•Marvellous Mhloyi•ARTICLE•Health and Human Rights•1995

The concepts of human rights and health are not alien to any nation that has endeavored to free itself of political oppression, sometimes at extremely high costs, while striving to provide medical services to its populace. Within free nations, however, the degree of individual freedom is extremely variable. At one extreme, there are countries in which individuals have very limited abilities to exercise their freedom; they may even be unaware of t…

  • Women and Aids in Zimbabwe

    Open Access•Mary T Bassett, Marvellous Mhloyi•ARTICLE•International Journal of Health…•1991

As the AIDS epidemic in Africa assumes major proportions, the need to understand the social context in which heterosexual transmission occurs takes on urgent importance. In this article we explore how the intersection of traditional culture with the colonial legacy and present-day political economy has influenced family structure and sexual relations, and particularly the social position of women. Drawing on Zimbabwe's historical experience, we s…

  • Women, Sexuality and the Changing Social Order

Marvellous Mhloyi, Marvellous M Mhloyi et al.•REVIEW•Population and Development Review•1991

The dominance of heterosexual transmission of HIV infection in sub-Saharan Africa has evoked new interest in investigating African sexual activity. Heretofore, generalizations depicting Africans as lacking a sexual code of conduct have militated against intervention efforts. This book is a refreshing deviation from what African leaders and policymakers have perceived as a cultural assault. Ahlberg focuses on small localized networks of Kenyan wom…
