Flourishing during stages of substance use recovery among members of The Phoenix
Background Substance use recovery is increasingly understood as a holistically process of personal and social growth rather than abstinence alone. This aligns with the concept of human flourishing, which is understudied in recovery communities. This study aimed to assess self-reported changes in flourishing among members of The Phoenix, a nationwide sober-active community, and to examine whether flourishing differed by recovery stage and length o…
Psychological safety mediates attendance and recovery-related outcomes within the Phoenix
Background: People in recovery from a substance use disorder often have difficulties forming pro-social relationships or accessing supportive communities. Providing psychological safety within recovery communities may be uniquely beneficial, yet psychological safety has mostly been studied among professional organizations and not among vulnerable populations. This program evaluation study examined associations between attendance, psychological sa…
Improving healthcare in adult probation services
This article reviews the development of the healthcare provision in youth offending teams (YOTs), and the implications of this for improving provision for adults supervised by probation. The Crime and Disorder Act (1998) made healthcare funding a statutory requirement in YOTs, and healthcare presence in most YOTs was significantly boosted by the collaborative commissioning initiative. There is no parallel commissioning initiative in adult probati…
Improving access to mental health services for those experiencing multiple disadvantage
Purpose This paper aims to explore the barriers to accessing mental health support for people experiencing multiple disadvantage along with some potential solutions for attempting to overcome these. It draws on evidence and learning from 12 voluntary sector-led partnerships in England funded by the National Lottery Community Fund’s Fulfilling Lives programme. Design/methodology/approach Qualitative research was undertaken with frontline staff, se…
Collecting qualitative data using a smartphone app
This article discusses the use of a smartphone application ('app') as a method for undertaking diary-based qualitative research with a group of participants with lived experience of multiple disadvantage (experience of two or more of homelessness, offending, mental ill-health and substance misuse). As part of a multi-method approach to the study, an app was designed for participants to capture rich, real-time qualitative data through a variety of…
The role of social mechanisms of change in women’s addiction recovery trajectories
Recovery from substance use addiction is a socially mediated process, with the formation of pro-social networks and engagement in community resources acting as catalysts for growth and change. Gender is a key mediator in pathways into and out of substance use, however literature that considers gender dimensions within the recovery paradigm is limited. This paper presents a secondary analysis of two qualitative studies undertaken with nine women i…
Delivering desistance-focused probation in community hubs
This article argues that probation is well placed to facilitate desistance when delivered in community hubs – community-based offices where probation services are co-located with other community-based provision. However, we highlight that hubs need to include certain key factors to maximise the potential for desistance. Using data collected through a piece of empirical research in six community hubs in England and Wales, we identify what factors …
Who owns desistance? A triad of agency enabling social structures in the desistance process
Theories of desistance assert agency is a prerequisite to the process; agency which can be enabled or curtailed by social structures. We present data from six community hub sites that hosted probation services in the UK in 2019. While our analysis identifies agency enabling institutional and relational structures across the different hub governance sub-types in our sample, these were clearest in hubs run in the community by the community. This ar…
