Staatlichkeit „ins Leben … rufen“. Das Reichsjustizamt und die deutschen Kolonien, 1884–1918
The ‘Only Door of Entrance’
This article analyses the Anglo-German negotiations, disputes and, finally, legal case concerning the border of the British Walvis Bay territory in Southern Africa. It exemplifies that the ‘scramble for Africa’ continued well after the first round of border negotiations had ended around 1890. This Anglo-German dispute was more than a disagreement over the location of one colonial borderline. The German government was unsatisfied with the size of …

Negotiated Partition of South Africa – An Idea and its History (1920s–1980s)
This article analyses a number of academic and journalistic proposals on the negotiated partition of South Africa coming from different schools of thought, from within South Africa and abroad, from the 1920s up to the late 1980s. These proposals of dividing South Africa into a ‘predominantly black’ and a ‘predominantly white’ state were presented by their authors as an alternative to apartheid and seen as a way out of the impasse created by the u…
Becoming a Good Farmer—Becoming a Good Farm Worker
This chapter analyzes the training provided to Germans who were eager to become farmers in German South-West Africa (GSWA) and considers related debates on the uses of colonial knowledge and tropical agriculture for the profit of the colony. The chapter considers (1) how colonial enthusiasts and administrators viewed the need for an improved tropical agricultural education given the setbacks encountered in GSWA; (2) how knowledge related to tropi…
African International Legal Histories – International Law in Africa
Hitherto, the ‘African part’ of the history of international law has often been limited to the (critical engagement with) ‘the acquisition of Africa’ since the 1880s and questions of ‘state succession’ and international borders following independence starting in the 1950s. In this historical narrative, the dominance of colonialism is evident. It seems that ‘Africa’ as a narrative concept in international legal history remains tied to abstract con…
Germans and the South Atlantic
Early sixteenth-century German geographers and mercenaries were well aware of the European economic and military expansion on both sides of the South Atlantic. The first part of this article traces the German knowledge production about this region based on maps and published eyewitness accounts. German visitors, whether for military, economic, or research purposes, were early on most attracted to the South American shores; southern Africa and the…

The Law in Nazi Germany
In large part grown out of lectures delivered at the University of Vermont in honour of Raul Hilberg, this collection of essays on The Law in Nazi Germany achieves two main objectives: first, it provides a concise overview of the current research strata on law in Nazi Germany, and second, the essays leave enough space to invite the reader to pose additional questions about the subject and pursue further reading. While the editors claim in their i…
