    Open Access•Andrea J Romero, Andrea Romero et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Consulting and…•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 30

Findings from this study indicate that the RI-CLPM is an effective strategy to examine bicultural stress and well-being processes among adolescents. There is a need for further research examining bicultural stress among Latinx immigrant youth, particularly within prevention and intervention studies. • Examining the temporal order of ethnic identity and perceived discrimination among Hispanic immigrant adolescents

    Melinda Gonzales‐backen, Melinda A Gonzales-Backen et al.•ARTICLE•Developmental Psychology•2017•Cited by: 23•References: 18

Ethnic identity formation is a central developmental task that can become challenging when adolescents face a salient stressor, such as ethnic discrimination. Although ethnic identity and experiences with ethnic discrimination are thought to be associated, the temporal order of these constructs is unclear. In the current study, we examined (a) the rejection-identification model and (b) the identification-attribution model in a longitudinal, cross…

  • Personal and cultural identity development in recently immigrated Hispanic adolescents: Links with psychosocial functioning

    Open Access•Alan Meca, Raha F Sabet et al.•ARTICLE•Cultural Diversity & Ethnic…•2017•Cited by: 32•References: 24

Given the direct effects of coherence and confusion on nearly every outcome, it may be beneficial for interventions to target personal identity. However, in contexts such as Los Angeles, which has at least some ambivalence toward recently immigrated Hispanic adolescents, it may be more beneficial for interventions to also target cultural identity to reduce confusion and thus promote positive development. • Alcohol use among recent immigrant Latino/a youth: Acculturation, gender, and the Theory of Reasoned Action

    Elma I Lorenzo‐Blanco, J Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 15

Although the association between collectivistic values and social disapproval of drinking was relatively small (β = .19, p < .05), findings suggest that collectivistic values may help protect Latino/a immigrant youth from alcohol use by influencing their perceived social disapproval of drinking, leading to lower intention to drink. Educational preventive interventions aimed at reducing or preventing alcohol use in recent Latino/a immigrant youth …

    Open Access•Miguel Angel Cano, J Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Adolescence•2015•Cited by: 51•References: 25

This study examined longitudinal effects of cultural stress (a latent factor comprised of bicultural stress, ethnic discrimination, and negative context of reception) on depressive symptoms and a range of externalizing behaviors among recently (≤5 years in the U.S. at baseline) immigrated Hispanic adolescents. A sample of 302 adolescents (53% boys; mean age 14.51 years) completed baseline measures of perceived ethnic discrimination, bicultural st…

  • Latino/a youth intentions to smoke cigarettes: Exploring the roles of culture and gender

    Elma I Lorenzo‐Blanco, J Schwartz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Latina/o Psychology•2015•Cited by: 4•References: 6

Latino/a youth are at risk for cigarette smoking. This risk seems to increase as youth navigate the U.S. cultural context, especially for girls. To investigate how acculturation may influence Latino/a youths' intentions to use cigarettes, this study combines a bidimensional/multidomain model of acculturation and the Theory of Reasoned Action. Our sample consisted of 303 recent Latino/a immigrant youth who had resided in the United States for five…

    Open Access•J Schwartz, Jennifer B Unger et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Psychology•2015•Cited by: 54•References: 10

This study examined, in a sample of recently immigrated Hispanic adolescents in Miami and Los Angeles, the extent to which bicultural identity integration (BII; involving the ability to synthesise one's heritage and receiving cultural streams and to identify as a member of both cultures) is best understood as a developmental construct that changes over time or as an individual-difference construct that is largely stable over time. We were also in…

  • Testing the Parent–Adolescent Acculturation Discrepancy Hypothesis: A Five‐Wave Longitudinal Study

Open Access•J Schwartz, Jennifer B Unger et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Research on Adolescence•2015•Cited by: 28•References: 24

This 21⁄2-year, 5-wave longitudinal study tests the hypothesis that acculturation discrepancies between Hispanic immigrant parents and adolescents would lead to compromised family functioning, which would then lead to problematic adolescent outcomes. Recent-immigrant Hispanic parent-adolescent dyads ( N = 302) completed measures of acculturation and family functioning. Adolescents completed measures of positive youth development, depressive sympt…

    Open Access•Ellinor Owe, Vivian L Vignoles et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Cross-Cultural…•2013•Cited by: 11•References: 59

Beliefs about personhood are understood to be a defining feature of individualism-collectivism (I-C), but they have been insufficiently explored, given the emphasis of research on values and self-construals. We propose the construct of contextualism, referring to beliefs about the importance of context in understanding people, as a facet of cultural collectivism.
